Papua New Guinea today marked a major milestone with the official launch of the National Social Protection Policy 2022–2030 at Queens Park in Mt. Hagen, an event led by the Department for Community Development and Religion through the Social Protection Secretariat.
Officiated by Minister Hon. Jason Peter and supported by Department Secretary Mr. Jerry Ubase, the launch highlighted the country’s commitment to strengthening social welfare systems and protecting vulnerable citizens facing poverty, unemployment, rising living costs, natural disasters, and social vulnerabilities.
The policy introduces key interventions—cash transfers, social insurance, livelihood support, and disaster-responsive safety nets—aimed at increasing income security, improving access to essential services, and ensuring that no one is left behind.
The event drew strong whole-of-government support, acknowledging the leadership of Director Mrs. Jenny Kila, Deputy Director Mr. Allan Gene, and the Social Protection Secretariat team whose dedication brought the policy to fruition. With collaboration from Treasury, Finance, DPM, DNPM, NEFC, DJAG, DPLLGA, CLRC, NYDA, and the Office of the State Solicitor, the policy’s implementation marks the beginning of a more coordinated, inclusive, and resilient social protection system for PNG.
