This is the tale of a man nearly forgotten.

A man whose unwavering belief in freedom came at an unbearable cost—his name was Brian Leonard Cooper.

In the sweltering afternoon of 1960 Madang, he shared dreams under a tree...

Whispers of independence for Papua New Guinea turned into crime.

Charged and imprisoned, he was labeled a traitor for daring to hope.

His release brought him back to a world that had moved on; his dream felt hopelessly distant.

Four years later, burdened by despair, Cooper took his life—a silent farewell with no mourners or monuments.

Yet his vision ignited change: fifteen years after his conviction, PNG embraced its freedom in 1975—the dream remained alive but unseen by him.

The story of Brian Leonard Cooper serves as a powerful reminder…of how dangerous it once was to champion independence! 🌍

Papua New Guinea today marked a major milestone with the official launch of the National Social Protection Policy 2022–2030 at Queens Park in Mt. Hagen, an event led by the Department for Community Development and Religion through the Social Protection Secretariat.

Officiated by Minister Hon. Jason Peter and supported by Department Secretary Mr. Jerry Ubase, the launch highlighted the country’s commitment to strengthening social welfare systems and protecting vulnerable citizens facing poverty, unemployment, rising living costs, natural disasters, and social vulnerabilities.

The policy introduces key interventions—cash transfers, social insurance, livelihood support, and disaster-responsive safety nets—aimed at increasing income security, improving access to essential services, and ensuring that no one is left behind.

The event drew strong whole-of-government support, acknowledging the leadership of Director Mrs. Jenny Kila, Deputy Director Mr. Allan Gene, and the Social Protection Secretariat team whose dedication brought the policy to fruition. With collaboration from Treasury, Finance, DPM, DNPM, NEFC, DJAG, DPLLGA, CLRC, NYDA, and the Office of the State Solicitor, the policy’s implementation marks the beginning of a more coordinated, inclusive, and resilient social protection system for PNG.
