Breaking News: Tragic Bus Accident at Kassam Pass 🚨

Kassam Pass, Papua New Guinea – July 20, 2025 – A tragic road accident occurred today at the summit of Kassam Pass, on the border of Eastern Highlands and Morobe Province.

A 15-seater Toyota Hiace bus, identified as belonging to KELLEN BUS Services from Goroka, was traveling from Goroka down to Lae. The bus, which was loaded with fruits and vegetables and carrying several passengers, rolled down the summit to the bottom of the mountain.

All passengers on board have sustained injuries and are reported to be in critical condition. They are currently awaiting assistance at the scene.

The accident happened around 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

If you believe a relative may have been traveling on this bus, please try to contact them to confirm their safety.

A trade link existed between Kandep in Enga province, Mendi and Poroma before the European contact. The trade route was to trade Kandep salt ( a traditional salt made from lakes in Kandep) and Kutubu tree oil . Even after the arrival of the white man the trade continued into the late 70s.

People from Kutubu brought tree oil to Poroma and Poromo people traded with Mendi, Ialibu and Nipa people where the oil reached Mendi, Mt Hagen, Tari and Kandep. The oil was an expensive trading commodity used for body decoration during singsings and marriages. The Kandep people traded their salt with the Mendi people and reached other centers utilizing the same trading route.

This was the biggest trading route in the Highlands where salt and oil played a very important role far and wide across Southern Highlands, Hela, Western Highlands, Enga , Jiwaka and went as far as Simbu.

These pictures were taken by David Robert Eastburn in the early 70s. We will appreciate if someone can identify them.

Papua New Guinea’s beloved singer-songwriter Daniel Bilip has come forward to shut down false rumors of his death that spread like wildfire across Facebook, WhatsApp, and TikTok today. In a heartfelt Facebook post, he shared:

🗣️ “I am okay. What people are sharing has caused great pain and anxiety to our loved ones…”
🙏 “I forgive you all.”

Still courageously battling tongue cancer, Daniel added:

🎗️ “The battle is tough but I am strong… God is good.”
💥 He urged fans to live healthier—quit betelnut, smoking, and drinking before it’s too late.
💉 Recently returned from radiotherapy in India, he’s now in Mt Hagen, recovering and receiving IV care at home despite ongoing side effects.

Daniel’s message is clear:
📢 Be mindful online, spread truth and kindness, and lean on faith and love in tough times.
