Minister Presents Cheque for Bougainville Disaster Relief 24042026

The Minister for Bougainville Affairs, Hon. Manasseh Makiba, has presented a cheque of K100,000.00 to support ongoing disaster relief efforts in Bougainville following the impact of Cyclone Maila.

The presentation, made on behalf of the National Government and under the direction of the Prime Minister, Hon. James Marape, reflects the Government’s continued commitment to assisting affected communities.

Speaking at the event, Minister Makiba conveyed the Government’s sympathies to those impacted by the disaster.

“On behalf of the National Government, I extend our deepest sympathies to the people of Bougainville affected by Cyclone Maila. This initial contribution of K100,000.00 demonstrates our commitment to supporting relief and recovery efforts,” he said.

Minister Makiba, who is also the minister responsible for the National Gaming Control Board (NGCB) also committed from NGCB K1 million to the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) to assist affected communities. These funds will be administered through the Bougainville Disaster Committee in coordination with the National Disaster Office.

In addition to Bougainville, the NGCB has allocated funding support to several other provinces impacted by the cyclone, including:

K1 million to Milne Bay Province
K1 million to East New Britain Province
K300,000.00 each to West New Britain, New Ireland, Manus, and Morobe Provinces

This brings the total NGCB contribution to K4.2 million in disaster assistance nationwide.

Minister Makiba reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring timely and coordinated support to all affected regions.

“The National Government, through the National Disaster Office and relevant agencies, will continue to work closely with provincial authorities to deliver essential relief and recovery support,” he said.

Autonomous Bougainville Government Chief Secretary and State of Emergency Controller, Mr. Kearneth Nanei, acknowledged the support and expressed appreciation to the National Government.

“We thank the National Government for its timely assistance, including the K1 million commitment from the NGCB towards disaster response in Bougainville. We are coordinating all relief and humanitarian supplies from the command centre to operational centres across Central, South, and North Bougainville,” Mr. Nanei said.

Mr. Nanei noted that Cyclone Maila has caused widespread destruction across the region, including damage to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods, as well as loss of life due to landslides and severe weather conditions.

The National Government continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to supporting affected communities throughout the recovery process.

SPIRITUAL HOME OF PEACE HOSTS CONSULTATIONS
A minute of solemn silence in honour of Bougainville's founding President late Joseph Kabui set the tone for the 3rd Joint Moderator's Consultations in Burnham Military camp, New Zealand last night.
Prime Minister James Marape while officating the opening of the 3rd Joint Moderator's Consultations at the Burnham Military camp in Christchurch, New Zealand, acknowledged that Burnham was the spiritual home of peace for Bougainville. The opening also coincided with the death anniversary of President Kabui.
Mr Marape said late Kabui was a giant of a leader, and his work towards the peace process must be honoured.
Mr Marape said Burnham was the spiritual home of the Bougainville peace process.
After the bloody 10 year war on the island, the first peace process started here at the behest of New Zealand. Burnham I and II Accords were penned followed by Lincoln Accord at the University of Lincoln. New Zealands' role in the Bougainville peace process has been immeasurable and hopes are high that a resolution will be reached yet in New Zealand again to resolve all outstanding impasse.
The PNG delegation included Bougainville Affairs Minister Manaseh Makiba, Attorney General Pila Niningi, Communications Minister Timothy Masiu, Chairman of Parliament Bipartisan Committee on Bougainville Dr Allan Marat and his deputy Hon. Sasindran Mutuvel, Chief Secretary Ivan Pomaleau and National Coordination Office of Bougainville Affairs (NCOBA) Director Mr Wemin Boi.
The ABG delegation was led by President Ismael Toroama, Deputy President Patrick Nasira, Independence Mission Implementation Minister Ezekiel Massat, former Presidents Dr John Momis and James Tanis and their Chief Secretary and other officials.
The weeklong Consultations will officially kick off today (Monday).

A SMALL, YET SYMBOLIC GESTURE TO COMMEMORATE INDEPENDNCE, WEMIN
The adage, ‘A picture tells a thousand stories’ can never be contested. The bright and breezy looks on the faces of these public servants is a snap shot of the nationalistic sentiment that swept the nation during the 49th Impendences Anniversary.
Patriotism took the better of millions of Papua New Guineans as they celebrated their country’s 49 Independence Anniversary throughout the weekend, culminating to the 16th September on Monday.
For many, their celebrations started with various programs scheduled since last Friday through the weekend.
Whether young, old, employed or unemployed, the spirit of unity was evident everywhere in Port Moresby and throughout the country.
Apart from the only distressing story of tribal conflict at the giant Pogera Gold mine in Enga province which left 21 people injured and forced the closure of the mine, the rest of the country reveled peacefully.
Media reports indicate a peaceful-celebrations in Port Moresby and rest of the country.
In the nation’s capital, staff of the National Coordination Office of Bougainville Affairs (NGCOBA) kicked off the anniversary with it’s usual clean-a-thon around it’s office and adjoining streets including Soare Street, Varahe Road, Magi Street and Spring Garden road.
Staff put on their gloves and attired in specially tailored independence gowns, collected rubbish with litter bags for a good part of Friday morning, 13th September 2024.
The next day, the staff turned up as early as 3am in the morning at the Independence Hill and took part in the flag raising ceremony.
A jovial NGCOBA Director Wemin Boi said, ‘It is a small but symbolic gesture to give back to our country while promoting a clean and safe work environment.’
