A SMALL, YET SYMBOLIC GESTURE TO COMMEMORATE INDEPENDNCE, WEMIN
The adage, ‘A picture tells a thousand stories’ can never be contested. The bright and breezy looks on the faces of these public servants is a snap shot of the nationalistic sentiment that swept the nation during the 49th Impendences Anniversary.
Patriotism took the better of millions of Papua New Guineans as they celebrated their country’s 49 Independence Anniversary throughout the weekend, culminating to the 16th September on Monday.
For many, their celebrations started with various programs scheduled since last Friday through the weekend.
Whether young, old, employed or unemployed, the spirit of unity was evident everywhere in Port Moresby and throughout the country.
Apart from the only distressing story of tribal conflict at the giant Pogera Gold mine in Enga province which left 21 people injured and forced the closure of the mine, the rest of the country reveled peacefully.
Media reports indicate a peaceful-celebrations in Port Moresby and rest of the country.
In the nation’s capital, staff of the National Coordination Office of Bougainville Affairs (NGCOBA) kicked off the anniversary with it’s usual clean-a-thon around it’s office and adjoining streets including Soare Street, Varahe Road, Magi Street and Spring Garden road.
Staff put on their gloves and attired in specially tailored independence gowns, collected rubbish with litter bags for a good part of Friday morning, 13th September 2024.
The next day, the staff turned up as early as 3am in the morning at the Independence Hill and took part in the flag raising ceremony.
A jovial NGCOBA Director Wemin Boi said, ‘It is a small but symbolic gesture to give back to our country while promoting a clean and safe work environment.’
