𝐌𝐒𝐒𝐔-𝐁𝐂𝐋 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝟏𝐒𝐓 𝐋𝐄𝐆𝐀𝐙𝐏𝐈 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐍

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊: Ten (10) personnel from the Maritime Safety Services Unit Bicol (MSSU-BCL), led by its Commander, LTJG Jonathan E Cañones PCG, successfully completed the 21-kilometer marathon held today, 01 June 2025, in Legazpi City, Albay.

This activity not only demonstrates the determination and resilience of MSSU-BCL personnel in facing greater challenges, but also signifies their camaraderie and physical fitness, an essential attribute in the performance of their maritime safety functions. It likewise forms part of their preparation for upcoming marathon and ultramarathon events.

𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒: Maritime Safety Services Unit Bicol Field Maintenance Installation Team (FMIT), together with Coast Guard Sub-Station Bulusan and with the assistance of Municipal Tourism Office, Bulusan, Sorsogon conducted Repair and Preventive Maintenance Service (PMS) at LS SAN BERNARDINO last 07 May 2025 located at San Bernardino Island, Bulusan, Sorsogon.

LS San Bernardino Particulars:

Classification: Primary
Coordinates: Lat 12° 45’ 15” N, Long 124° 16’ 57” E
Flashing Characteristics: Flashing White Light every 10 seconds
Status: Operational as of 07 May 2025

This endeavor is part of the continuing commitment of the Maritime Safety Services Unit Bicol to uphold the reliability and visibility of maritime navigational aids within its area of responsibility. The successful restoration of LS San Bernardino significantly enhances navigational safety in the waters surrounding Bulusan, Sorsogon ensuring safer passage of vessels and local fisherfolk operating in Sorsogon.

𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒: The Maritime Safety Services Unit Bicol Field Maintenance Installation Team (FMIT), together with MT Montreal personnel and with the assistance of LGU Monreal, Masbate, successfully installed lantern and Aids to Navigation (ATON) equipment at LS SAN MIGUEL today, 25 April 2025 located at Brgy. Guinhanap, Monreal, San Miguel, Masbate.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊: The Maritime Safety Services Unit Bicol conducted 5-day lecture on Maritime Safety Functions as part of the ongoing Coast Guard District Bicol's Capacity Building Program. A total of 65 personnel from the District, along with various Stations and Substations actively participated in the activity.

The initiative highlights this unit steadfast commitment to enhancing the knowledge and readiness of Coast Guard personnel in the Bicol region, ensuring the effective delivery of maritime safety services and the continued protection of lives and property at sea.

RECREATIONAL SAFETY TIPS

LOOK: The Maritime Safety Services Unit Bicol urges the public, especially beachgoers, to stay vigilant and observe the Recreational Safety Tips provided by the Maritime Safety Services Command through the Recreational Safety Enforcement Unit (RSEU) to help prevent and reduce incidents this summer vacation.

Here are the safety reminders:

1. Ensure that there is a lifeguard on duty in the beach resort you are visiting and ensure lifesaving devices are available.

2. Ensure that there are medicines available in the first aid station of the resort you are visiting and or always bring personal first aid kit for your own safety and convenience.

3. Check if there are safety net, flag signals and buoy markers in the area to swim.

4. Always read safety signages that reminds beachgoers for restricted and unrestricted swimming areas.

5. Ensure to read beach resort's or the establishment's rules and regulations for your safety.

6. Avoid swimming near docking area and navigable waters of recreational watercraft such as boats, jet ski, etc.

7. Use the buddy system. Never swim alone and when under the influence of alcohol. Accompany at all times all young and old companions. Always inform your family/group whenever you plan to swim.

8. Most importantly, know all emergency hotlines near the visited beach resort or establishment.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊: The Maritime Safety Services Unit Bicol (MSSU-BCL), in collaboration with Coast Guard Station Camarines Norte and Coast Guard Special Operations Group Bicol conducted a lecture as part of the ongoing PCG Lifeguard Training at Candelaria Beach Resort, Paracale, Camarines Norte, on 31 March 2025.

The lecture covered essential topics to enhance the participants knowledge and readiness including:

1. Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Practices.
- Identifying hazards and risks
- Evaluating hazards and risks
- Controlling hazards and risks
- Maintaining OSH awareness

2. Lifeguard Knowledge
- Lifeguard roles and responsibilities
- Proper uniform, sun safety, and lifeguard fitness

3. Lifeguard Operations
- Effective surveillance and patrolling
- Use of flags and casualty identification
- Lifeguard communication and report forms

4. Swimming Pool Safety
- Identifying potential dangers
- Pool maintenance and drowning prevention

5. Safety Guidelines for Various Aquatic Activities

6. Beach Environment and Hazards
- Understanding different beach types and associated risks

This initiative not only enhances the safety of beachgoers and strengthens lifeguards preparedness in responding to emergencies but also serves as part of the PCG's readiness efforts for the expected influx of tourists this upcoming Holy Week.

MSSU-BICOL CONDUCTS MSSU-NUPAO APPROA 2025

IN PHOTOS: The Maritime Safety Services Unit Bicol (MSSU-BCL), led by LTJG Jonathan E Cañones PCG conducted the MSSU-NUPAO Annual Planning and Performance Review and Organizational Assessment (APPROA) 2025 at Emeiland Beach Resort, Brgy. Sugod, Bacacay, Albay from 28-29 March 2025.

This two-day activity was crucial in evaluating the unit’s performance, identifying areas for improvement and aligning strategies with the organization’s long-term goals. The assessment provided valuable insights into current operations, guided future strategies and highlighted opportunities to enhance organizational efficiency.

The MSSU-NUPAO APPROA 2025 was attended by MSSU-Bicol personnel and Lighthouse Keepers.
