PGAW KICKS OFF, HONORS GALLAGA’S LEGACY

The Peque Gallaga Appreciation Week (PGAW) officially started on March 24, at Museo de La Salle with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a special talk by guest speakers Ronald "Onat" Rios and Domingo “Barney” Molina.

The aforementioned speakers shared their insights on Gallaga’s contributions to the Philippine cinema and his influence on young filmmakers.

Organized by the Community Society - USLS (CSU), this event aims to educate the public about Peque Gallaga's impact and inspire future filmmakers.

“I hold the firm belief storytellers like us are here because of Peque Gallaga,” said the CSU President, Francis Ampil in his opening remarks.

“We are told it [humanities] will not make us any money, that there are far more pressing pursuits [...] But people like Peque dared to break the mold and show us not only is it valid, not only is it feasible, it is also worth our time,” Ampil added.

The exhibit, which will run from March 24 to 28, showcases Gallaga’s films, achievements, and legacy.

Students, teachers, and film enthusiasts can view posters and memorabilia from his famous works, like “Tiyanak” and “Oro, Plata, Mata”.

: In Bloom, In Thorns, and In Between: Redefining Womanhood

Shall I compare thee to a rose?

Ever so soft, ever so delicate, enclosed in a glass chamber to be admired for her beauty, but never for her strength. But alas! As fingers begin to graze past her petals, the thorns prick, and suddenly she is too much, too clever, too sharp and unfitting for a rose as she.

Dominating the lanes on the regional stage, Josh Klent Magno, a Communication freshman, took home three gold medals and one silver for the University of St. La Salle (USLS) at the second Negros Island Region Private Schools Athletic Association (NIR PRISAA) Games, during the competition held from March 12 to 13.

Magno nabbed gold in the 200m, 100m, and 50m breaststroke events and contributed to a silver-medal finish for the USLS swimming team in the 4x100m medley relay.

Reflecting on his victories, Magno shared how rewarding and enjoyable the opportunity to represent USLS at PRISAA was for him.

“I was given an opportunity to play [for] USLS. It was [really] super fun—met new friends [too],” Magno said.

He humbly credited his achievements to the guidance of his coaches and his diligence and dedication to his training, emphasizing the importance of focus.

“[Special] thanks to my coaches, Sir Max Masculino, Coach Bong—without them [I wouldn’t be] at this level of competition. I put every ounce of myself [in] training just to achieve that gold medal, being disciplined always, and [focused]. Well, it paid off!”

Magno also expressed his gratitude for the unwavering support of his parents, friends, and girlfriend, who motivated him throughout his journey.

The second NIR PRISAA Games brought together top athletes from 17 private schools across the region, with winners given the chance to represent NIR in the National PRISAA Games.

Representing the University of St. La Salle (USLS), the tandem of second-year Communication student Alejandro Blad Biugos and second-year Psychology student Hannah Grace Espadon won silver in the Vocal Duet competition of the Negros Island Region Private Schools Athletic Association (NIR PRISAA) Games, held at the St. La Salle Coliseum on Sunday, March 9th.

Biugos reflected on their five-and-a-half-month preparation, describing the journey as empowering, life-changing, and liberating.

“Every time I've closed my eyes up to this day, I've immensely thanked the Lord that I've been blessed with a beautifully supportive family, a good-hearted duet partner, and a community of marvelous people who have seen in me what other people have not. I am truly proud [...] for getting on that Coliseum stage [...] and bravely singing from our hearts, to the hearts of the people,” Biugos shared.

Other winners from the said competition included John Vincent Cabugay and Nash Acub of Colegio San Agustin - Bacolod, who took bronze, and Tresha Mae Giavia and Jastine Serapio of VMA Global College, who won gold.
