Long before students confidently stepped into hospital wards wearing crisp white uniforms one educator had already devoted herself to ensuring they would do so with competence,compassion, and integrity. For 35 years of ongoing service, Dr. Jo Ann A. Flores,PhD, RN, has quietly shaped not only nurses but lives, leaving an imprint that extends far beyond the classrooms and clinical areas of Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod.
As the outgoing Program Head of the Nursing Program, Dr. Flores reflects on a career built on service, leadership, and unwavering dedication to nursing education. A registered nurse, nurse educator, and proud alumna of Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, she has spent more than three decades nurturing future healthcare professionals who embody the Augustinian ideals of love, service, and excellence.
For Dr. Flores, nursing was never simply a career choice. It was, and continues to be, a calling.
โNursing has always been more than a profession to me. It is a calling," she shares. โ๐๐ก๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ญ, ๐ก๐จ๐ฉ๐, ๐๐ง๐ ๐ก๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ข๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ข๐ซ ๐๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ซ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐ ๐ฐ๐ก๐ฒ ๐ ๐๐ก๐จ๐ฌ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง."
Her passion for caring for others eventually grew into something even greater. While bedside nursing allowed her to touch individual lives, she soon discovered that teaching would allow her influence to multiply. Every student she mentored would one day care for countless patients, carrying forward the knowledge, compassion, and ethical values she had instilled. One of the defining moments of her professional journey came when she realized that her greatest contribution was no longer limited to direct patient care. Instead, it was found in educating and mentoring aspiring nurses.
"Every graduate who provides safe, compassionate, and competent care carries forward the values and knowledge we have shared," Flores says. "Witnessing our graduates succeed in different parts of the world and serve their communities with excellence is one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional life."
Throughout her years as an educator and academic leader, Dr. Flores discovered that leadership extends far beyond administrative responsibilities. It is reflected in the ability to inspire confidence, encourage growth, and help students recognize their own otential.
She recalls how seeing students transform into capable healthcare professionals affirmed her life's purpose. Watching former students become leaders in hospitals, educators in classrooms, and compassionate caregivers across the globe remains her greatest measure of success.
โLeadership is not merely about managing programs or making decisions, is about inspiring others to become the best version of themselves. " she explains.
"It is about inspiring other to become the best version of themselvesโ Her philosophy has remained consistent throughout decades of service, excellence must always be paired with empathy. Technical competence alone is not enough. Nurses must also possess humility, integrity, and genuine compassion for every patient they encounter.
As she offers advice to future nurses, Dr. Flores emphasizes that the profession demands lifelong learning and unwavering commitment to humanity.
"Always remember that nursing is more than a career. It is a vocation that demands knowledge, compassion, integrity, and lifelong learning," she says. "Every patient deserves not only your competence but also your kindness, respect, and empathy."
Her message resonates beyond the walls of the College of Nursing. It serves as a reminder that the true measure of a nurse lies not only in clinical expertise but also in the ability to bring comfort, dignity, and hope to those in need.
After 35 years of service, Dr. Flores leaves behind more than an impressive career. She leaves a legacy reflected in every nurse she has mentored, every life her students have touched, and every patient who has unknowingly benefited from her guidance. While titles eventually change and leadership roles come to an end, the values she cultivated will continue to live on through generations of Augustinian nurses. In shaping those who care for others, Dr. Jo Ann A.
