The Polytechnic University of the Philippines Radicals bucked a sluggish start to outscore local favorite Colegio San Agustin Bacolod, 95-85, for a back-back triumph in the Philippine University Games basketball tournament.

Enderun Colleges settled for the bronze medal following its 100-68 demolition of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Rams.

The Unigames basketball tournament was held at the Negros Occidental Multi-Sport Gym at Panaad Park in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

PUP won all its six matches going into the finale against the Agustinians.

The Radicals prevailed over Enderun Colleges, 103-99, in the all-NCR semifinal game after dismantling La Consolacion College, 124-69, in the quarterfinal.

San Agustin, the reigning NOPSSCEA champion, won over local rival UNO-Recoletos, 96-80, in the other Round of Four encounter.

The Agustinians managed to put up a gritty defense in the first quarter which ended 27-23 in their favor.

“We fought really hard during first quarter but we continued to push through until the end, but they were (PUP) a tough opponent.” said CSAB Eagle Andrie Dubouzet.

The Radicals, however, pulled away in the final quarter following a seesaw battle that ended in a 71-all deadlock at the end of the third quarter after PUP led by a hairline, 54-53, at halftime.

Led by Dominador Madeha, who scored 25 points, PUP’s defense limited CSAB to only 14 points in the final canto against its 25 enroute to defend its 2024 title.

“It was a loud heartbeat when we tied with them at the end of the third quarter... we were getting tired but still we continued to push through, it was just disappointing that although we did our best, it still wasn’t enough,” said John Mycco Deposoy, San Agustin ace player, who led his team with 24 points.

PUP Coach Mark Ian Quirante said that the key to their victory was the consistency of the players in their game.

“They took their time in reaching their proper momentum in the arena but they continued to believe in the support they were receiving,” he said.

The Unigames basketball tournament had 18 participating teams.🏆GABarrios

National University and De La Salle University did a quick work over Big City rivals to clinch the men and women's volleyball titles in Season 26 of the University games.

The championship matches were held Oct. 30 at the Natalio G. Velez Cultural and Sports Center in Silay City.

DLSU, led by Bacolod native Angel Canino, a member of the national team, needed only one hour and four minutes in crafting a 25-12, 25-14, 25-16 victory over University of the East.

Another Negrense, Leo Ordiales, was at the forefront of the campaign of National University, which dethroned Adamson University, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 in an hour and 23 minutes.

DLSU volleyball head coach Ramil De Jesus pointed that part of the program’s success is its adapting to developments in the sport. You’d be left behind if you don’t adapt, he said.

UE made it a twin runner-up affair by finishing third in the men’s division following the Red Warriors’ 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 domination of Iloilo Doctors’ College.

In the match for third place in the women’s division, Ateneo de Davao University needed four sets to foil University of San Agustin 25-22, 25-14, 22-25, 25-12 in the all-Visayas-Mindanao encounter.

DLSU’s Unigames women’s volleyball title is the sixth for the Lady Spikers, having won in 2003, 2004, 2012, 2014 and 2019.

For NU, it’s their third men’s championship trophy after winning in 2018 and 2021.🏆
