Along the eastern seaboard of Luzon, lies a coastal town Baler, Aurora wherein thrusting waves are more than just noises, but a vessel of life for its beating heart as water vanguards turn the tides beyond the global shore, becoming a surfing stardom.
Behind every great wave, there are stories to tell. For Baler, it all began when Hollywood came to town. This hidden place became a haven for salty-haired travelers, after Francis Ford Coppola, a renowned american director brought his epic "Apocalypse Now," in the late '70s to the sleepy shores of Sabang Beach.
As Balereรฑos continued to be captivated, watching every scene of the play until the crew packed up and the tides swallowed their footprints, a fragment of potential curiosity was left, these were surfboards. Some may just see this as discarded trash, but for the people of Baler, they regarded these as an opportunity. Time flew by, the locals were dancing along the waves which began as a pastime became a way of life for the town.
Now, Baler is no longer a secret spot whispered among wanderers, it is now a site for surfers. From first-timers experiencing their first wipeout, to legends riding their hearts out with their aerials through the tidal waves of Sabang, the same Sabang Beach that once served as a backdrop now hosts international surfing competitions, drawing athletes and enthusiasts around the globe.
In 2023, the Philippine Government sealed the legacy with the Republic Act No. 11957, officially naming Baler the โBirthplace of Philippine Surfing.โ

All geared up to conquer the town's towering waves, surfers are about to maneuver Baler's blue tides as they ramp up their surfboards on the upcoming World Surf League (WSL) Baler International Pro 2025, on this year's November 17-23.
Going back from the last sea*on of WSL at the same cradle, over 100 of asia's prominent surfers have set their foot along Baler's coastline last February 1-7, 2024, wherein some filipino surfers broke historic waves such as Jay-R Esquivel, clinching a back-to-back victory after his last win on WSL's La Union International Pro Longboard event, January 22-28, 2024.
Mark your calendars as Baler is set to host another historic event, taking Sabang's shores into another level, waking the sleepy coastal town from deep slumber as surfers across the globe once again ride the waves of their own stories.

Beyond Sabang, other Baler breaks such as Cemento Reef, Charlieโs Point, and Lindyโs Point, have also gained international attention. These spots challenge surfers with crazy barrels and right-hand reef breaks that separate the casual surfers from the true wave warriors.
All of this makes Baler special as it was not born out for tourism, but from the Balereรฑos curiosity, as they found freedom in the sea and passed that passion down through generations.
