𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐑𝐘 | 𝘒𝘪𝘹 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘌. 𝘊𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨

I once dreamed of spending the night with you—picture us sharing many tender kisses, goofy smiles, and warm embraces while cooking our overdone dinner; those are the things that I imagine you and I would share.

Imagine us driving on an endless road to wherever the horizon takes us; it would be just as majestic as our eyes meet.

When tiredness sets in; I offer if you would like to stay the night in my place because it’s already late. The next thing that would happen is that we are already facing my apartment door.

It’s late. I am not used to having dinner this late, but if it means sharing the table with you and listen to your soft voice, I am ready to lend my ears all though out the night.

I see our shadows dancing in unison to the rhythm of our interconnected hearts, shouting for genuine care that satisfied our shared sense of identity. The dull kitchen lights shine so bright the moment you touch my skin, showing love and affection that you promise would last.

Perhaps a night with you is something that I am longing for; perhaps my imagination will continue until beyond midnight. But for now, ten o’clock at night, our shadows are still dancing in my imagination.

What can a fictional character like Ken teach us about gender equality?

The 2023 Barbie movie transformed Ken's character from a simple sidekick into a powerful symbol of self-discovery and the struggle against rigid gender roles. His journey reflects broader conversations about masculinity and its evolving place in feminist movements.

Feminism's success requires active male participation. By challenging patriarchal norms and advocating for equality, men can play a crucial role in reshaping society. Ken's story shows that breaking free from traditional roles isn't just possible—it's essential for meaningful change.

For centuries, societal expectations have confined men to toxic masculinity, suppressing vulnerability and enforcing dominance. In Barbie, Ken's struggle to define himself beyond "just Ken" mirrors the challenges many men face today in confronting outdated ideas of masculinity.

As Dutch activist Jens van Tricht points out in Why Feminism is Good for Men, feminism not only liberates women but also benefits men. Embracing feminism allows men to form deeper relationships, share responsibilities more fairly, and address harmful behaviors. Ken's "Kendom" phase in the movie shows the dangers of misguided male dominance. His realization that self-worth isn’t tied to control reflects a larger lesson for men: only by breaking away from traditional power structures can they become genuine allies.

Prominent male feminists like Barack Obama and Justin Trudeau demonstrate how men can make meaningful contributions to gender equality. Obama has used his platform to advocate for policies such as the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and has openly identified as a feminist. Trudeau, by appointing a gender-balanced cabinet, has championed feminist initiatives worldwide. Similarly, Ban Ki-moon, as leader of the HeForShe campaign, has engaged men globally to support gender equity.

These figures show that 𝙛𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙢 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙚𝙙 𝙫𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙛𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙨𝙚𝙚𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚. It’s a movement that thrives on unity and shared efforts for a more inclusive society.

Filipinos are known for being resilient in the face of the calamities. We tend to thrive, adapt, and manage to find joy among the overwhelming chaos, as resilience is deeply known in our culture and is often celebrated as a source of pride and strength.

We are known for being optimistic in every natural disaster, economic struggle, or personal hardship. We hold onto hope, believing that better days are ahead. Our optimism shines through, even during our darkest days, and serves as a coping mechanism for others.

While our positive mindset is commendable, it also raises a critical question: Is resilience enough? Or should we also demand better changes to prepare for disasters?

As a child, I saw how my family is getting ready for every typhoon that may come. I saw the roof being carried away by the strong winds, and my loved ones are asking God for mercy. I vividly remember their efforts to secure our personal belongings and the prayers echoing within these thin walls as the rain pours endlessly.

This reliance of faith and hope draws strength from our deep beliefs, believing that these challenges are part of God's plan. This reliance on divine intervention is a source of comfort and also a testament to our deep spirituality.

Growing up, I began to wonder: Why do we rely on resilience so much? Is it because we have no other choice? Is it because there are no systematic changes, leaving us to fend for ourselves in the midst of a crisis?

While our bayanihan is admirable, relying too much on resiliency can mask the truth that we need a better systematic change. Relying on recovery efforts for every calamity is not enough.

What if instead of recovery, we invested more in prevention?

Imagine if we invested in better sewage, flood control systems, better disaster education, and government responses — these efforts and our resiliency could save lives and reduce suffering among Filipinos.

Our strong bayanihan and resiliency are in our nature as Filipinos. It is what keeps us on moving forward.

But maybe it's time to strive and demand more than just surviving disasters. We must demand better disaster management, greater accountability from our leaders, and stronger sustainable solutions.

By combining our bayanihan spirit with preparation and action, we can build a safer nation for future generations.

The 1999 “Huwag Kang Matakot” hit song by Eraserheads, that was composed by Eli Buendia, the frontman of the band, dedicated this creation to his newborn child, Eon Drake Buendia. The song was remembered by many as a song with significantly impactful lyrics;

The lyric tells us that in life, there are downfall situations that we can’t handle by ourselves. Sometimes if life is a bit hard on us it is okay to ask for help, to seek for validation, and to find someone to lean on.

Darkness may scare us in so many ways; it can be a life full of doubts and a life full of uncertainties, but this song reminds us that there is someone who is willing to spend the night with us to scare away the monsters that brings the darkness in our lives.

It’s okay to feel that we are being left behind, life is not a race and most importantly life brings us endless possibilities. There are so many potentials that life offers to us; it teaches us how to be brave, and how we carry ourselves through the circumstances that life throw at us.

Our world is our kingdom and you are the God and King of your own world. We should not let anyone take over our empire, ruin our momentum, and let anyone take our chances in life and tell us what we should do. They should be scared of what you are capable of.

This song is a reminder that it is okay to admit that we need help. We can’t enjoy life with just by ourself, we need someone who is willing to catch us when we are falling apart, accompany us when darkness took over our vision, and to remind us that we can hone so many possibilities in life. That “someone” who will always tell us that it is not easy to live our life, but that “someone” will also help us to bring out the best version of ourselves.
