Did you know?

Before the arrival of the Spanish, the shores of Laguna de Bay — including what is now Barangay Malaban (formerly known as Manlalaban) — were home to peaceful fisherfolk and hunter-gatherers, living in harmony with nature and deeply rooted in their land and traditions.

In June 1571, Captain Juan de Salcedo led a Spanish expedition into the eastern shores of Laguna de Bay. Upon reaching what is today Barangay Malaban, they encountered fierce native resistance. Local inhabitants wielding bows, arrows, spears, and bolos stood their ground in a skirmish that came to be known as the Battle of Manlalaban, which later gave the barangay its name.

Despite the bravery of the defenders, the Spanish forces prevailed and planted a large wooden cross to symbolize their victory. The natives were thereafter baptized and gradually integrated into the colonial Christian society.

This historic encounter marked the beginning of a cultural transformation in the region—a shift from defiance to adaptation—while preserving the enduring spirit of resistance in the local heritage.

Did you know?

The "Binyagan" Theory:

After the Spanish conquistadors arrived and established a presence, they held a thanksgiving mass and baptized the local population. The natives then began referring to the place as "binyagan," which the Spanish, with their difficulty in pronouncing the word, eventually changed to "Biñan".

The Banyan Tree Theory:

Another theory proposes that the name came from the Banyan or Banian tree (Balete Tree), which is known for its large size. However, this theory is less favored.

Biñan is also known for its historical significance, particularly its connection to Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero. Rizal studied in Biñan under Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz. His father, Francisco Mercado, and his mother, Teodora Alonso, were also from Biñan, and Rizal's maternal grandfather was a former capitan of the town. The Alberto Mansion, a historical house in Biñan, is also a significant landmark connected to Rizal and his family.
