COMMITMENT ON TRIAL
In times of testing, our faith and commitment grow as we personally discover God's love and power.
September 24, 2025
Genesis 22:15-18

Abraham began walking with the Lord many years before he was asked to offer Isaac on the altar. His first step of faith involved leaving his home and going to a land God pledged to show him. But now he was being told to sacrifice his son—the child of promise, through whom God would bring forth a great nation and bless the entire world. Offering Isaac up was the biggest challenge Abraham ever faced, yet he obeyed.

At times, the Lord tests our commitment. These moments are not only opportunities for us but also expressions of His love, designed to help us grow in faith, obedience, and spiritual maturity while increasing our dedication.

Abraham’s obedience was shaped by his understanding of God. He believed that the Lord would keep His promise to give him descendants through Isaac, even if it required raising the boy from the dead (Hebrews 11:17-19). That’s why Abraham confidently declared to his servants, “We will worship and return to you” (Genesis 22:5, emphasis added). He knew God was faithful.

If you’re going through a time of testing, the Lord wants to prove to you that He’s faithful to His promises and will greatly bless your obedience. The experience may be painful in the moment, but all the while He’ll surround you with His love.

MOSES - FORWARD BY FAITH
Every hardship that weakens our self-reliance strengthens our faith in the Lord.
September 23, 2025
Exodus 33:12-23

Living by faith can come with times of hardship. Let’s look at Moses. In order to serve the Lord, he had to choose to go forward by faith in spite of many daunting challenges.

Having grown up in Pharaoh’s palace, Moses knew all about the Egyptian ruler’s pride, as well as the importance of Hebrew labor. So he understood the difficulty of carrying out God’s command to free His people from slavery. As it turned out, Moses’ job didn’t really begin until they were released. He then spent more than 40 years leading the Hebrew people, interceding for them when they disobeyed God, and calling upon the Lord for rescue when they faced trouble.

Moses’ life was marked by trials and sacrifice, but more importantly, it was shaped by an intimate relationship with God. Every hardship that knocked away his self-reliance strengthened his faith in the Lord. When a new challenge arose, Moses turned first to God for guidance and provision.

Scripture tells us that adversity produces deeper intimacy with the Lord (1 Peter 5:10). Moses’ life demonstrates this, and the same holds true for us. Hardships are inevitable. We can try to avoid them but will likely end up frustrated and unsuccessful. A wiser approach is to meet each challenge and go forward by faith.

CHRIST: OUR KEY TO CONTENTMENT
The children of God inherit His spiritual riches, including deep inner peace and joy that can withstand anything.
September 22, 2025
Philippians 4:6-7

While in prison, Paul wrote precious words about the sufficiency of Christ. We tend to associate the idea of contentment with beach vacations and mountain retreats, but from an unpleasant place, the apostle asserted we are not to be anxious, because we have the Lord’s peace.

Contentment is the believer’s birthright. Peace is part of the spiritual fruit that is ours when we trust in Jesus; it is an inward serenity that passes all understanding (Phil. 4:7). The Lord lived through conflict with a sense of inner quiet, and because of the indwelling Holy Spirit, that remarkable calm also belongs to God’s children.

But there’s a flip side as well: “‘There is no peace for the wicked,’ says the Lord” (Isaiah 48:22). The wicked are those who willfully reject God’s right to forgive their sins and take command over their life. This means that if you aren’t a believer, you can’t experience true and lasting contentment.

When we are born again (John 3:3-8), we become children of the living God and rightful heirs to every good thing He offers—including the deep inner peace and joy that can withstand any trial. This ironclad promise is a sure blessing for those who belong to the Lord (Hebrews 13:6).

OBSTACLES TO CONTENTMENT
Even those with a strong faith in the Lord may have seasons where they struggle with uncertainty.
September 21, 2025
Matthew 6:25-30

When we place our faith in the Lord, we entrust every aspect of our life to our sovereign God, who wants the very best for His children. What do we have to fear when we place our confidence in Him?

Believing in the Lord doesn’t mean that we’ll never experience uncertainty. But it does mean we must choose to trust Him to provide for our needs in His time and His way. Otherwise, fear and doubt can manipulate our thoughts and compel us to make unwise choices.

Anxiety itself isn’t a sin, but faith can be shaken when its foundation is weakened by unbelief. For example, if we tell ourselves, I know God is capable of dealing with my problem, but I’m not sure He will, we may start to look for our own solution. Since it’s always wisest to wait on the Lord (Lamentations 3:19-25), trouble can brew when we take matters into our own hands.

The Lord sees the beginning and the end of every situation we face. He knows the causes of our anxiety, the best way to calm our heart, and how to turn our weeping into joy. When we leave the method and timing to Him, He will take care of the issue. And He’ll do so without leaving our side, because He loves us deeply and desires to bless us richly.

THE BELIEVER'S VALLEY EXPERIENCES
God promises that He will use every trial—even those of our own making—to benefit us.
September 20, 2025
Psalms 23:1-6

Valley experiences are moments when heartache or hardship makes it feel almost impossible to keep functioning. Like a giant wave crashing over our head, such events can be overwhelming.

Realistically, situations like these will sometimes be of our own making. If we disobey God, we can end up in a painful place. Suffering can also be caused by others—perhaps through loss, infidelity, or betrayal. Then there are occasions when our heavenly Father Himself leads us into the valley. Although He could guide us in a way that bypasses the anguish, He chooses not to. He has a purpose in mind, which would not be fulfilled if we took a smoother path.

Whatever the cause, Psalm 23 uses four words to describe the time we spend in such valleys: shadow, death, fear, and evil. There is no way to hurry through an ordeal marked by emotional or physical distress. A trial’s depth and length are determined by the Lord’s will, but He walks with us and protects us as we endure it.

God promises that He will use every valley—even those of our own making—to benefit us (Romans 8:28). But with eyes firmly fixed on Him, we must walk steadily, attuned to His presence and trusting in His pledge.

BRINGING OTHERS TO JESUS
We all have unique personalities and different opportunities, but each of us can share Jesus with someone.
September 19, 2025
John 1:35-42

The disciple Andrew is known for bringing people to Jesus. Immediately after meeting the Lord, he found his brother Simon and introduced him (John 1:41-42). Later, when a great multitude was hungry, he found a boy with five loaves and two fish and brought him to Jesus (John 6:8-9). And when some Greeks wanted to meet Christ, Andrew and Philip made the introductions (John 12:20-22). The disciple’s actions show that he clearly saw the importance of knowing the Savior.

By asking “Rabbi, where are You staying?” (John 1:38-39), Andrew was making a request to spend time with Jesus and learn from Him. The disciple’s example is a good reminder that sweet fellowship with the Lord isn’t limited to devotional times. Rather, it should stimulate a desire to share with others the joy we find in our relationship with Christ. And just as Andrew wasn’t shy about connecting others with the Messiah, we should be ready to do likewise anytime the situation presents itself.

When Andrew answered the call to discipleship, Jesus told him he’d be catching men instead of fish (Matthew 4:18-19). As followers of Christ, we also have this same wondrous goal. Our styles, personalities, and opportunities to do so may vary, but we’re each tasked with bringing others to Jesus.

HOW GOD REVEALS HIMSELF
If you want to know God better, make Bible study and prayer a habit.
September 18, 2025
Romans 1:18-21

Look at the delicate veins of an oak leaf, and you’ll experience the beauty of God. Watch a thrashing thunderstorm, and you witness His power. We need to look no further than nature to understand that God is real.

Paul tells us that the revelation of the Lord in nature is sufficient to render inexcusable those who would deny His existence (Rom. 1:20). But nature can’t give us a complete picture; that is why He gave us His Word. The Bible reveals God’s character and explains His expectations of the faithful. In its pages, we can learn about our Father and the kind of life He wants us to lead. As 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.”

Scripture teaches about the living Word—Jesus Christ—who is the fullest possible revelation of God. The heavenly Father wants humanity to know Him intimately, and to make that possible, He sent His Son clothed in flesh. Jesus said, “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him” (John 14:7). So let the grandeur of creation point you to the Creator—and then, to know God better and better, spend time in His Word daily.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SALVATION
The free gift of salvation is available to everyone—and it comes only through Jesus.
September 17, 2025
Acts 16:28-33

Have you ever wondered if faith in Jesus is really the only way to be saved? It’s an important question—and thankfully one with a clear answer.

The truth is, God gave us free will so we can choose to accept or reject the salvation that Jesus Christ offers. Though He desires for all to be saved, the Lord will never compel us to believe. Scripture tells us, “God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:17-18).

Verse 16 clearly states that whoever believes in the Son will be saved. This means you can be sure of your salvation by asking Jesus to be your personal Savior. God, who wants you to spend eternity with Him, offers a compelling reason to make this all-important decision: “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life” (John 3:36).

The free gift of salvation is available to everyone—and it comes to us only through Jesus (John 14:6). Receive Him now, and you will never have to wonder what awaits you in eternity.

THE ADVANTAGES OF ACCOUNTABILITY
Have you found a wise Christian friend to help you stay balanced and pursue righteousness?
September 16, 2025
Hebrews 10:23-25

At times, people make a mistake by ignoring wise boundaries. But a godly accountability partner can share wisdom to help us avoid such missteps. This type of relationship has valuable benefits:

* Clearer direction. Being honest about faults and failures will lead us to pursue right counsel and encouragement.

* Increased integrity. If we have to give an account to somebody, we’re more likely to live transparently (Proverbs 10:9).

* Better stewardship. Being answerable for the way we use our money, time, and talent makes us steward those resources more carefully.

* Defense against excess. As believers, we’re free in Christ, but an accountability partner helps us to stay balanced and pursue righteousness.

* Healthy self-examination. Another person can often point out what we cannot see in ourselves.

* Protection against unwise relationships. If we have someone who can help us consider which people to spend time with, we’ll be more likely to avoid problematic situations.

Do you check in regularly with someone wise? If not, consider inviting a trustworthy Christian to fill that role. Taking this step reveals a heart that longs to please God.

Accountability Is Scriptural
Accountability benefits both the individual and the church as a whole.
September 15, 2025
James 5:13-16

While there are plenty of biblical directives about accountability, the idea of revealing details from our private life makes many of us feel vulnerable. Christians don’t have an option, however. It is clear that we’re meant to be mutually supportive and transparent. Consider James 5:16, which says, “Confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed.”

Regardless of one’s position, everybody is accountable to somebody. This holds true for the entire family of faith, including leaders. For instance, church members take direction from a pastor (Hebrews 13:17), and Paul tells us to be subject to one another (Ephesians 5:21) while he himself was answerable to the church (Acts 14:27). The apostles were under the authority of Jesus (Luke 10:1-12), even as Jesus was subject to the Father (John 8:28-29). The Bible also tells us the church is obedient to the Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:24). This mutual accountability is healthy, benefiting both the individual and the body as a whole.

People avoid accountability for various reasons—like pride, ignorance, fear, and self-reliance. This is a dangerous approach to life. Our enemy knows our weaknesses and how to exploit them. But we can prevail with the support of friends. There is strength in the body of Christ.

GETTING RID OF ANGER
Change is possible because Jesus broke the power of sin and will help us make God-honoring choices.
September 14, 2025
Ephesians 4:31-32

The apostle Paul wrote extensively about the character and conduct of believers. He said that as Christians, we are to “walk in a manner worthy of [our] calling” (Ephesians 4:1) and to “be imitators of God” (Ephesians 5:1). His entire letter to the church at Ephesus is a beautiful explanation of what it means to live a godly life.

First of all, we must curtail some of our old habits and behaviors and replace them with new ones that are God-honoring. We have a new nature and should conduct ourselves accordingly. Galatians 5:19-21 lists 15 behaviors that we should avoid. Notice the role anger plays in each of these. It fuels hard feelings and encourages hostility.

As we grow in the Lord, the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) should replace our ungodly thoughts and actions. If we’ve been quick-tempered, then we need to gain patience. If our anger runs hot, then we’re to become peaceful. Foolishness in speech must give way to the quiet wisdom of Christ. Change is possible because sin’s power over us has been permanently broken.

As new creations, we no longer have to be defined by who we were before salvation (2 Corinthians 5:17). We have been set free to live in a way that is pleasing to God through the Holy Spirit’s transforming work.

UNRIGHTEOUS ANGER
Ongoing anger robs you of the life that God desires for you, so ask the Lord for help to overcome it.
September 13, 2025
James 1:19-20

Anger can shut down communication and destroy relationships. Unchecked, it can boil over and hurt others.

While we can think of many reasons to justify our anger, the only viewpoint that matters is the Lord’s. The book of Proverbs offers insight into how God views angry people. He says they act foolishly (Proverbs 14:17), stir up strife (Proverbs 15:18), and commit transgressions (Proverbs 29:22). He also warns us not to associate with such individuals (Proverbs 22:24).

In contrast, those who are slow to anger have great understanding (Proverbs 14:29) and demonstrate wisdom (29:8). Keeping one’s distance from strife also shows honor (Proverbs 20:3).

The apostle James compared the tongue to a spark that can set a forest on fire (James 3:5-6). He also taught that our anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires for us, nor does it fit who we are in Christ.

There were a few instances when Jesus became angry, but they were fully in line with the Father’s purposes and were therefore righteous. In us, however, anger is usually born out of self-defense, hurt feelings, or thwarted desires. If the Lord has convicted you of anger, confess that sin and allow the Spirit to reproduce Christlike character in you.
