Papal Nuncio’s visit brings recognition, inspiration to Kalinga

TABUK CITY, Kalinga — The recent visit here of Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Charles John Brown has left a lasting impression on residents of Kalinga, with many describing the occasion as a significant moment not only for the local Catholic Church but for the province as a whole.
Archbishop Brown’s presence in Kalinga underscored the importance of the Apostolic Vicariate of Tabuk and its growing role in the life of the Church. His visit coincided with the episcopal ordination and installation of Bishop Sean B. Mejia as the third Apostolic Vicar of Tabuk.
The visit was a rare opportunity to witness firsthand the Pope’s envoy and to feel the closeness of the Vatican to local communities in the country’s far-flung areas.
Archbishop Brown drew admiration when he joined local residents and Christian faithful in performing the traditional “pattong” or beating of gongs. The gesture was seen as a recognition of Kalinga’s cultural heritage and a sign of respect for the traditions that continue to shape the province’s identity.
Residents said the visit served as a source of inspiration and unity, bringing together church leaders, government officials, indigenous communities, and pilgrims from various provinces.
Provincial officials also noted that the visit placed Kalinga in the national spotlight, providing an opportunity to showcase the province’s culture, hospitality, and peaceful environment to visitors from across the country.
The gathering drew thousands of faithful and marked one of the largest religious events held in the province in recent years. Church leaders said the occasion reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s commitment to accompanying communities in the peripheries and strengthening the faith of local believers.
For many Kalingas, the visit was more than a ceremonial event. It was a recognition of the province’s place within the universal Church and a reminder that faith can bridge cultures, as symbolized by the sight of the Papal Nuncio joining the rhythmic sound of gongs in celebration with the people.
