BREAKING NEWS: IT’S FINAL — THE CONTROVERSIAL PROPOSED BORACAY BRIDGE WILL NOT PUSH THROUGH
BORACAY ISLAND, May 27, 2026 — Cong. Florencio Miraflores and Gov. Jose Enrique Miraflores made a historic announcement during a consultation meeting with stakeholders at Henann Regency this morning: SMHC’s unsolicited Boracay Bridge proposal is officially no longer pushing through.
According to Gov. Miraflores, during a May 13 meeting at the SMC headquarters in Pasig City, San Miguel Corporation President and CEO Ramon S. Ang (RSA) declared:
“We will not pursue the Boracay Bridge project.”
RSA reportedly said he received a call from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. informing him that the project did not have local government support.
“Hindi pwede yan. It cannot be done without the endorsement of the local government. If it is not acceptable to the community, I will not pursue the project. Ayokong magkasamaan ng loob. I will focus efforts on finishing the terminal building at the Caticlan Airport,” RSA said.
The gentleman’s agreement was punctuated by handshakes between RSA, Cong. Miraflores, Gov. Miraflores, and Atty. Reynaldo Quimpo.
Addressing stakeholders and multi-sectoral groups in attendance, Cong. Miraflores said:
“He listened to your collective voices. After our previous consultation meeting, you all created a lot of noise. This is a product of the community working together, and I think we were really guided by the Lord.”
The issue of upgrading the jetty port was also raised during the meeting.
“Rest assured, we are in agreement that we need to improve the 28-year-old jetty port, which is one reason there was talk of a bridge in the first place,” Cong. Miraflores added.
The meeting ended in high spirits, with the Boracay and Aklan communities expressing gratitude and relief.
Next steps include conducting and publishing an environmental study aimed at preventing future projects that are not environmentally sound for Boracay Island.
From the Island of Boracay and the Province of Aklan:
“Thank you, Mr. Ang, for listening.”
