Student leaders of Father Saturnino Urios UniversityโAbp. Morelos Campus gathered at the AVR on the 12th of September 2025 for the Student Leaderโs Assembly, where University President Rev. Fr. Randy Jasper C. Odchigue addressed key issues ranging from the university's strategic direction to infrastructure developments and student welfare.
Fr. Odchigue emphasized the importance of aligning decisions with the university's strategic thrusts, urging leaders to make choices that serve the institutionโs goals and uphold responsibility and integrity.
Drawing from Homerโs Odyssey, he likened Ithaca to FSUU itselfโa home that some students may wish to leave, but one that already offers the quality education they seek elsewhere. โWhen you decide to come home, you will always have a place here. Parents donโt need to send their children elsewhere, because FSUU already offers quality education right here,โ he said.
This reflection underscored the universityโs mission to provide transformative education without requiring students to leave Caraga.
A significant highlight of the assembly was the celebration of PAASCU Level 2 accreditation, achieved through the collaborative efforts of students and faculty. Fr. Odchigue explained the benefits of accreditation, including increased academic mobility and enhanced opportunities for students from less privileged backgrounds.
The assembly also showcased the university's commitment to research, highlighting international publications, partnerships, and ongoing initiatives in fields like biology and health. Students were encouraged to participate in research projects, particularly those addressing pressing issues such as teenage pregnancy and HIV rates in the Caraga region.
Infrastructure developments, including renovations to the FSUU gym and the establishment of a shared service facility, were presented as evidence of the university's dedication to providing a conducive learning environment. The shared service facility, supported by a grant from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), aims to improve the packaging and labeling of local products, fostering economic growth in the region.
Dr. Arlyn M. Floreta, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, introduced the theme for the year, โTransformation in Education: Integrity in Action,โ using the analogy of a potterโs wheel to illustrate the transformative power of education.
During an open forum, student leaders raised concerns about traffic congestion, potential government funding for clubs, and data privacy. Fr. Odchigue addressed these issues, outlining plans to alleviate traffic problems and assuring students that data privacy would be protected with the implementation of facial recognition technology.
In line with this, Engineer Zenaida Azura provided reminders about the importance of practicing energy and water conservation, proper waste segregation, and promptly reporting facility-related issues to ensure a sustainable and efficient campus environment.
Meanwhile, Maโam Suzette Viรฑas highlighted the potential of the Morelos Webcast as a platform where students can actively promote the university. She explained that the webcast was designed primarily for student use, providing a creative space to showcase talents and explore interests such as broadcasting.
She also encouraged student leaders to maximize available tools for photo and video editing, emphasizing that this initiative would not only boost student creativity but also strengthen FSUUโs online presence and visibility.
The assembly ultimately underscored the emphasis of the Student Leaders of Father Saturnino Urios UniversityโAbp. Morelos Campus for Academic Year 2025โ2026: a commitment to responsible leadership, academic excellence, student welfare, and sustainable campus development in line with the universityโs strategic thrusts.
