Butuan City, July 21, 2026 โ€” Officers of the KBP Butuan Chapter paid a courtesy visit this afternoon to PCol Richie M. Yatar, Director of the Butuan City Police Office (BCPO). The meeting, held at 2:00 PM at the BCPO headquarters, highlighted ongoing and upcoming initiatives to strengthen public safety in the city.

Among the priorities discussed were the upgrading of BCPO facilities through the national budget, the establishment of four additional police stations starting in 2027, and the recruitment of new personnel to expand the force from its current 800 to 1,000 officers. PCol Yatar noted that while the minimum personnel requirement per station was previously 54, current conditions call for at least 70 officers per station.

Plans also include the provision of more patrol cars, reinforcement of security at all entry points into Butuan City, and enhanced police visibility through beat patrols at designated hours. PCol Yatar also shared communityโ€‘focused programs such as โ€œMagkape Kasama si CDโ€, which involves visiting barangays and schools to assess local security concerns.

Other projects in the pipeline include a neighborhood watch program, closer coordination with mall security, and an active shooter drill for schools โ€” a proactive measure in light of recent incidents in Leyte.

The courtesy visit underscored KBP Butuanโ€™s commitment to fostering collaboration with local law enforcement, ensuring that both media and police work handโ€‘inโ€‘hand in promoting safety and community trust.

Butuan City, July 15, 2026 โ€” The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) of Butuan City opened its first hearing today on the proposed ordinance promoting responsible and sensitive reporting of news and content. The session, held at 10:00 AM in the SP Session Hall, City Hall Compound, was attended by officers of the KBP Butuan Chapter, who actively participated in the discussions.

The ordinance aims to strengthen existing mandates on responsible broadcasting in print and radio, as well as ethical content sharing on social media. It seeks to ensure that local news remains accurate, balanced, and respectful of community standards.

Representing the local media sector, KBP Butuan underscored that there should be no animosity between the LGU and legitimate media organizations. They emphasized that any ordinance addressing perceived excesses in media practice must be carefully defined, thoroughly discussed, and crafted with specific provisions to avoid being misconstrued as a measure that curtails press freedom.

The first hearing was described as a success, helping to clear up misunderstandings between the KBP and the LGU. Both parties expressed optimism that continued dialogue will lead to a stronger partnership in promoting responsible journalism while safeguarding press freedom.

More hearings are scheduled in the coming weeks to refine the ordinance and further strengthen collaboration between the city government and the local media community.
