“Si Angela, kaibigan ko, nandito siya noong nakaraang linggo.” Simula ng lalaki. “Sabi niya, may mahika daw tong lugar. Matapos niyang inumin ang tsaa mo, paggising daw niya, pakiramdam niya ang gaan gaan niya. Pakatapos nun, tumawag sakanya ex niya tapos bigla silang nagkaayos.”

Nagkatinginan sila ni Isabel. Napakunot ang noo ko. Ano daw?

“Oh, deity of the Steel Coffins!” I fall to my knees, speaking fast, the way the ancients were said to speak. “Forgive me—I merely seek answers for a famine that has struck my land!”

“Uh.”

“Children fall ill. Elders say the soil is angry!” I tuck my head between my arms. “Against my father’s orders, I trespassed, knowing that our songs do not lie—and that power and knowledge hide in the heart of the Cave…”

“What is this… weird dialect, or language, or…?” I hear whirring from inside one of the coffins. “Translation module calibrating any time, now…”

I keep my head down.

“Hey, kid. How long was I asleep?”

The lighthouse application office was a flat building with warped floors and the smell of ink that never faded. Two men stood in front of her in line, both arguing over a shipping tax. Behind the counter, a clerk with thinning hair barely looked up when Martha stepped forward.

“I’m here to apply,” she said.

“For what?”

“The lighthouse.”

The scratching of pen stopped.

He peered at her like she’d announced she was marrying a horse. “You’re serious?”

“I am.”

“No one lasts more than a night up there.”

“Then I’ll break the record.”

“You’ll go running by midnight. They always do. The last man swore he heard breathing behind him all night. The switch kept flipping off on its own.”

“I’m not afraid of ghosts.”

“That’s what the others said. Before they ran.”

I’m sure you’re aware of the origin of The Storm, yes?

They said that it’s the cry of the sea as it grieves once a year for abandoned dreams. While that much is true, we mermaids knew one thing that humans don’t—a story, if you may.

We were told by our ancestors that this is also where dead dreams gather. At the center of The Storm, beneath the violent tides tainted by the color of lost dreams, lie the fragments of those that died.

Getting a hold of them would allow one to reshape them into another relic… into another dream.

I’ll get one for you, Kyne. But note that this is not out of pity.

I’ve been searching for a long time for a dream I wanted to live with, and I think I’ve finally found it.

I want to help you to fulfill my own selfish desires. Let me indulge in that selfishness just this once.

He stepped toward the gates, letting go of my hand. “I’ve tried leaving, believe me. I can’t. I was pulled in here with him, so I can only leave if he does too.” He turned to face me. “Your case is different.”

I exhaled in frustration. “You can’t seriously expect me to leave you here.”

“You should. Unless you want to be stuck here too.”

I stared at him before glancing one last time at the mansion, now swallowed up in darkness. “Fine. But I’m coming back.”

“What?” He looked at me incredulously, almost laughing at what he just heard.

I walked past him, gripping the bars of the gates. “I’ll get you out of here. So…” I looked back at him one last time. “Wait for me.”

After opening the heavily wrapped and boxed parcel, Dylan found a small urn, presumably one used for cremation, tucked securely inside of it. After carefully placing it on the coffee table, he began rotating the urn to observe its detailed surface—a white artwork made of clouds and a soaring bird contrasted with the ocean blue finish, and somewhere in the design was a name engraved in a handwritten font.

He leaned closer. “Isla?”

To his shock, the urn answered in a female voice. “Um, yes?”

First of all, tropes aren’t bad. They exist for a reason and are not lazy by default. They’re psychological shortcuts that tap into deeply rooted human desires, fears, and fantasies.

• The Chosen One? It’s the need to feel special in a world that makes us feel invisible.
• The Grumpy/Sunshine dynamic? It’s the fantasy that love can soften the hardest hearts.
• The Found Family? It’s the hunger for belonging when blood ties have failed us.

Tropes are comforting. As readers, they help us know what to expect. As writers, they help us in building blueprints for our stories.

I like to call them guides—training wheels, even—’cause they provide a stable, comfortable foundation. But that comfort can easily slip into predictability when the guide becomes a mass-produced cookie-cutter that makes everything look the same, and so a lot of stories end up… well… boring.
