Approximately 800,000 people die by su***de each year. That's one person every 40 seconds. Women are more likely to have depression than men. An estimated 3.8% of the population experience depression, including 5% of adults (4% among men and 6% among women), and 5.7% of adults older than 60 years. Approximately 280 million people in the world have depression. Although there are different rates of su***des and suicidal behavior between males and females (among both adults and adolescents). While females more often have suicidal thoughts, males die by su***de more frequently.
Mental health issues do not simply surround women but also men. Due to societal norms about men like emotional control and self-reliance, men often keep everything to themselves in order for them to be seen as masculine by the society. Thus, making them more vulnerable to mental health issues.
Men should be encouraged in seeking help and opening up regarding their mental health struggles without any judgement. For a safe and inclusive space to be created for everyone, one must show understanding, acceptance, and support to each other's own journeys.
