In a recent diplomatic discourse, Ambassador Mylene J. Garcia-Albano underscored the noteworthy accomplishment of the Philippines in a dialogue with Special Advisor to the Prime Minister for Women’s Empowerment, Consumer Policy, and Elderly Policy, Michiko Ueno. The Philippines secured the 16th position in the 2023 World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index Report, solidifying its standing as the preeminent force in gender equality within South East Asia. The ambassador attributed this success to the country's robust legislative framework, specifically citing the Magna Carta of Women Act. This legislation mandates that government agencies allocate 5% of their budget to gender mainstreaming activities, thereby manifesting a tangible commitment to fostering parity.
Moreover, Ambassador Garcia-Albano acknowledged the cultural norms in the Philippines that endorse women's active participation in the workforce, supported by robust familial bonds. In response, Special Advisor Ueno commended the Philippines' exemplary experience and conveyed Japan's unwavering dedication to expediting progress on women's empowerment through a meticulously crafted policy framework. Emphasizing the imperative of addressing societal biases, Ambassador Garcia-Albano reiterated that effecting change demands concrete actions and dedicated resources.
The substantive dialogue concluded with Ambassador Garcia-Albano reflecting on the successful visit of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to Manila on November 3, 2023. Furthermore, Special Advisor Ueno extended a formal invitation for a dialogue on women's issues scheduled for November 8, 2023, marking the 50th year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. This gesture underscores the enduring commitment to fostering collaborative efforts in the pursuit of gender equality.
