PUBLIC ADVISORY

TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF BUNTUN BRIDGE (Tuguegarao City, Cagayan) UPON REACHING 12.0 METERS LEVEL FOR PRECAUTIONARY/PREVENTIVE MEASURES

In view of the continuous rise of the Cagayan River's water level, which has now reached a critical level, and taking into consideration the present condition of Buntun Bridge, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region II, in coordination with the Municipality of Solana, the City Government of Tuguegarao, the Provincial Government of Cagayan, and the Philippine National Police (PNP), hereby announces the temporary closure of Buntun Bridge to all types of vehicles and pedestrians EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY ONCE CRITICAL LEVEL REACHES 12.0 Μ.

This precautionary/preventive measure is undertaken in the interest of public safety to protect lives and property. The structural integrity of the bridge is being closely monitored, and the closure will remain in effect until the water level subsides and safety assessments confirm that the bridge is safe for passage.

Motorists and the general public are advised to take alternate routes and cooperate with traffic management authorities during this period.

The DPWH, together with concerned agencies, is exerting all efforts to ensure public safety and will issue further advisories as soon as conditions permit the reopening of the bridge.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

ALAM MO BA?: FIRST-EVER SKULL OF EXTINCT ELEPHANT RELATIVE DISCOVERED IN THE PHILIPPINES

Paleontologists from UP Diliman and the University of Wollongong have confirmed the discovery of the first Stegodon skull ever found in the Philippines, unearthed in Solana, Cagayan.

Stegodons, extinct relatives of modern elephants, once roamed the islands. The fossil—believed to be from a “teenage” Stegodon slightly taller than an average Filipino—includes a complete tooth and two tusks, an exceptionally rare find since skulls rarely survive fossilization.

Researchers said this Luzon Stegodon closely resembled those from Indonesia, hinting that ancient elephants swam across seas to reach the Philippine islands. The find supports evidence that the country once hosted multiple Stegodon species, from large-bodied to dwarf forms.

The study, led by Meyrick Tablizo, Dr. Allan Gil Fernando, and Dr. Gerrit van den Bergh, was published in Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology.
