1. Container Ship
A cargo vessel specially designed to transport all its load in standardized, truck-sized intermodal containers. They are the backbone of modern global trade for non-bulk cargo, using a system called containerization for rapid loading and unloading.
2. Tanker
A ship constructed to transport or store liquids or gases in bulk. This category includes oil tankers (for crude oil and petroleum products), chemical tankers, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers. They are characterized by the absence of cargo hatches and use pipelines and pumps for cargo transfer.
3. Bulk Carrier (Bulker)
A merchant ship specifically designed to transport unpackaged (non-liquid) bulk cargo in its large cargo holds. Common cargo includes commodities like grain, coal, iron ore, and cement. They are typically single-deck vessels with large hatch covers on deck.
4. Passenger Ship
A merchant ship whose primary function is to carry passengers on the sea. This category includes vessels designed for travel and leisure, such as cruise ships (for pleasure voyages with extensive amenities) and ferries (for short-sea, day-to-day transport of people and often vehicles). According to international safety conventions, a ship with accommodation for more than 12 passengers is typically classified as a passenger ship.
