Welcome to Shanghai, China!
Our first day started with excitement — but quickly turned into a series of travel misadventures that every traveler needs to know before visiting this megacity!

From "no-show" complimentary shuttle pickups to overcharged taxi fares...

We experienced it all — and we’re sharing every detail so you don’t get scammed.

Since transport fares in China are relatively affordable, we decided on getting a taxi to bring us to our hotel instead of waiting 2 hours for our complimentatry hotel shuttle.

We headed to the the airport’s official taxi bay to hop on a “metered” taxi.

Being aware that isolated cases of taxi scams exist in China, where tourists are overcharged,
I checked my mobile 𝗗𝗶𝗱𝗶 application to get a reference of the estimated taxi fare to our hotel.

Then, I made sure to hop on a “metered” taxi.
This was clarified and verified several times before the journey even started.

Upon boarding, I initially checked the meter on the taxi to see if its working. And it was.

After which, I opened the navigating mobile application, 𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗣, to track our supposed journey.

The taxi initially drove an estimated of 200meters then stopped, that’s the time I asked if they accept payments via Alipay.

That’s when their negotiation through a language translator started.

Since our luggage won’t fit on a single taxi, we hailed two.

Each taxi was charging us 200 CNY for the trip. A total of 400 CNY for the two taxis.

I refused and insisted running on a meter as agreed prior to the trip.

He refused and insisted to stick on 200 CNY which is 3 folds of the actual taxi fare to our hotel, as per
𝗗𝗶𝗱𝗶 app.

The driver tried to overcharge us, thinking we were clueless tourists.

Thankfully we uploaded the 𝗗𝗶𝗱𝗶 app, where estimated cost of taxi fares are displayed

The moment we sensed the red flag, instead of throwing an argument, while we have not completely left the airport’s premises, I obliged the driver to just take us where we left off.

He took us back, following my firm protest.

That’s how we got off the hook safe and sound.

The next mishap was… the supposed complimentary shuttle service provided by our accommodation.

Scared from the experience,
we decided to just wait for the complimentary hotel shuttle, but to our disappointment it never showed.

After waiting and calling — no pickup. So we had to grab a taxi again...

This time, we headed to the area where DiDi drivers pick up their passengers.

𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 :
I promised my work partner that I will treat her to a good hot pot restaurant in Taipei.
𝗛𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘁 - beloved local specialty.

We loved our previous dining experience in "Mala", Ximending, so I wanted her to try it as well.

However, the journey did not go as planned.
So we skipped Mala and went to 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀.

9:30 PM :
All restaurants in 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀 were already closed. Likewise in the airport, and we still have a flight to catch by 1:00 AM back to Manila.
Gutom na ang mga persons, 2:00 PM pa ang last meal 🤨🙃

So I asked around...
Yay! There's a hot pot resto, short walking distance from Gloria Outlet. Saya ! 💃🕺

10 minutes later , with our luggage in tow,
we are seated in a hot pot restaurant (yes na push!) pero confused...

No one understood nor spoke English... 🤭😫🙉
Yung menu in Chinese din.
So we relied on the pictures.
Turo. Turo.

Ending, 3 sets pala na-order namin.
2 of which were big platter sets.

Ito yung first time na nahirapan kami mag communicate sa restaurant.

However, the staff were so kind and tried their best to communicate.

🎵But, I guess our best wasn't good enough.

Super busog!
Dahil ang dami pala namin naorder.
Daig pa namin ang nag-bufffet!

Cravings satisfied and I must say,
parang mas bet ko ito sa Mala hotpot :)
