Now I understand Sonny Trillanes, and I owe him an apology for the harsh words I once said about him supposedly fracturing the legitimate opposition just because he was criticizing Leni. Posting this just to be fair to Senator Trillanes. His main point is simple: the opposition cannot properly plan for 2028 while Leni Robredo remains undecided, whether she will run again or if she has already officially passed the torch to someone else. Meanwhile, Sara the Explorer is already rolling in money, machinery, and trolls, with her “for president” campaign plastered all over social media like a nonstop paid ad. Tayo? Naiiwan na naman sa alanganin.
No one can move, no one can begin the serious groundwork, because everyone is waiting for the queen’s word. Natural lang, she has earned that respect after leading the fight in 2022. But while there is no clarity, other leaders and organizations are stuck, unable to plan, form a slate, mobilize funds, or build a volunteer base. And the risk is obvious: history repeating itself. A late decision, a mad scramble, and an opposition once again caught flat-footed while the enemies, long prepared, march ahead.
To those who say “trabaho muna, matagal pa ang 2028,” the other side is not sleeping. Their “trabaho” is propaganda, disinformation, and early positioning. The real work of an opposition is both daily resistance and long-term preparation. If we delay, we surrender 2028 before the first poster is even printed.
That is why we need to start the groundwork now. We must identify and prepare competent and excellent candidates for 2028, not only for the presidency but also for the Senate and Congress. This fight cannot rest on a single pair of shoulders. We need a broad, solid, and well-prepared slate of leaders ready to carry the banner of reform and the fight against corruption, whether with Leni at the helm or with her blessing passed to another.
If Trillanes is right, then we ignore him at our peril. If Leni’s camp has a plan that he is not looped into, then I hope it surfaces soon so unity comes earlier, not later. His problem is not his patriotism, because no one can question his love for country. His problem is messaging. Trillanes has the fire but often not the finesse, and so he is easy prey to those who twist his words. A good PR team could sharpen his delivery so people hear his point, not just his temper.
At the end of the day, this is not about personalities. It is about survival. The enemy is rich, organized, and relentless. If we waste time waiting, we lose before we even fight. But if we unite early, build smart, and prepare well, then 2028 will not be a repeat of despair but a chance to finally win.
Because the future belongs to those who start now, not to those who arrive last and wonder why the gates are already closed.
