In its continued effort to enhance institutional performance and academic quality, Tayabas Western Academy (TWA) held a virtual orientation titled โ€œTWA Quality Assurance (QA) Mechanismโ€ on 16 April 2025. The session was led by Mr. Marck Andro Bernabe, with support from the Office of the President and the Research and Extension Center (REC), and attended by thirteen key academic personnel, including program chairs, principals, and assistant principals.

The orientation aimed to strengthen TWA's commitment to continuous improvement through the implementation of a comprehensive quality assurance framework. It served as a platform to examine performance data, discuss educational idea, and align institutional goals with national standards, particularly the Commission on Higher Education Memorandum Order No. 46, s. 2012.

Mr. Bernabe explained the role of quality assurance in education, emphasizing the need to change both the way things are set up and the way people think. Participants actively contributed their insights on how TWA can build a stronger culture of quality, especially in how assessments are done and how students perform.

The meeting also explored the TWAโ€™s academic performance, focusing on the National Achievement Test results from Grades 6, 10, and 12, as well as board exam passing rates for the education and accountancy.

We must level up the institution not only through our systems but also in our values," said Mr. Bernabe, who also sits as a member of the Strategic Planning Team. "This is not just a compliance issue; itโ€™s about nurturing a culture of excellence," he added.

Meanwhile, TWA Acting President Mr. Orlando Montecillo said: "If we truly want improvement, we must begin by addressing the barriers to how we think and operate. Institutional growth starts with internal change."

During a reflective moment in the session, REC Coordinator Vin Aranas investigated the definition of quality, prompting a discussion on the broader meaning of academic excellence. "Quality must be continuous, relevant, and inclusive," said Dr. Marlon Bunyi, Senior High Principal. For Mr. Mark Alartejos program chair at the College department, "quality is about holistic development โ€” not just within the school, but how our students grow beyond it.

The orientation concluded with the presentation of the TWA Quality Assurance Mechanism Framework, which included policy mandates, legal documentation, a self-assessment survey tool, and strategies for balancing academic and extracurricular activities. Mr. Bernabe emphasized the urgent need for implementing updated student assessment tools across all levels.

Nineteen educators from Tayabas Western Academy (TWA) participated in the pilot Research Bootcamp on 3 March 2025 at the TWA College Conference Room. Organized by the Research and Extension Center (REC), the Bootcamp aimed to empower TWA faculty by identifying research teaching gaps and enhancing their research knowledge and skills.
Serving as the resource person, Dr. Winifredo Dagli from the University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos delivered a lecture on social research, highlighting its crucial role in developing studentsโ€™ analytical skills and workplace readiness, and driving social change. Particularly in the face of widespread misinformation, Dr. Dagli stressed the vital role that teachers play in equipping students with character-building and research skills, enabling them to responsibly seek answers to their own questions. Consequently, participants were provided with practical classroom techniques for teaching research design and methodologies.
During a lively discussion on research gaps, participants reported studentsโ€™ struggles with research literacy, title formulation, and resource limitations. Faculty members also cited challenges in accommodating diverse learning styles, addressing comprehension deficits, managing time, bridging generational divides, and accessing professional development.
To address these challenges, Dr. Dagli emphasized the importance of learner-centered strategies for content delivery. According to him, lectures have to be short and combined with asynchronous learning sessions where students can interact with classmates or read sample research outputs. He also stressed the importance of managing studentsโ€™ anxiety over research and writing by providing timely and adequate feedback, organizing writing bootcamps, and providing a useful style guide, among others.
โ€œI have learned various techniques on how to teach researchโ€ฆ from teaching how to select and validate research titles, wherein we must consider the interests of and the benefits to the community, to the data gathering process and so on,โ€ said Ms. Eloiza Hernandez of the TWA Junior High School Department.
Dr. Dagli concluded his presentation by addressing critical issues in research methods, including research ethics, the prevention of academic dishonesty, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
The Research Bootcamp also featured TWA President Orlando Montecillo, who emphasized TWAโ€™s commitment to continuous improvement for faculty and students. Also attending were Mr. Marck Andro Bernabe, who highlighted the vital role of communication in effective teaching, and REC Coordinator Mark Vincent Aranas, who outlined TWAโ€™s research agenda and the RECโ€™s goal of enhancing research teaching through updated methodologies and learning strategies. The Bootcamp concluded with a summary of key discussions, outlining future research initiatives.
