In its continued effort to enhance institutional performance and academic quality, Tayabas Western Academy (TWA) held a virtual orientation titled โTWA Quality Assurance (QA) Mechanismโ on 16 April 2025. The session was led by Mr. Marck Andro Bernabe, with support from the Office of the President and the Research and Extension Center (REC), and attended by thirteen key academic personnel, including program chairs, principals, and assistant principals.
The orientation aimed to strengthen TWA's commitment to continuous improvement through the implementation of a comprehensive quality assurance framework. It served as a platform to examine performance data, discuss educational idea, and align institutional goals with national standards, particularly the Commission on Higher Education Memorandum Order No. 46, s. 2012.
Mr. Bernabe explained the role of quality assurance in education, emphasizing the need to change both the way things are set up and the way people think. Participants actively contributed their insights on how TWA can build a stronger culture of quality, especially in how assessments are done and how students perform.
The meeting also explored the TWAโs academic performance, focusing on the National Achievement Test results from Grades 6, 10, and 12, as well as board exam passing rates for the education and accountancy.
We must level up the institution not only through our systems but also in our values," said Mr. Bernabe, who also sits as a member of the Strategic Planning Team. "This is not just a compliance issue; itโs about nurturing a culture of excellence," he added.
Meanwhile, TWA Acting President Mr. Orlando Montecillo said: "If we truly want improvement, we must begin by addressing the barriers to how we think and operate. Institutional growth starts with internal change."
During a reflective moment in the session, REC Coordinator Vin Aranas investigated the definition of quality, prompting a discussion on the broader meaning of academic excellence. "Quality must be continuous, relevant, and inclusive," said Dr. Marlon Bunyi, Senior High Principal. For Mr. Mark Alartejos program chair at the College department, "quality is about holistic development โ not just within the school, but how our students grow beyond it.
The orientation concluded with the presentation of the TWA Quality Assurance Mechanism Framework, which included policy mandates, legal documentation, a self-assessment survey tool, and strategies for balancing academic and extracurricular activities. Mr. Bernabe emphasized the urgent need for implementing updated student assessment tools across all levels.
