The Walden’s Hornbill, locally known as Dulungan, is one of the Philippines’ most remarkable and threatened birds. It is a critically endangered hornbill native to the West Visayas and is particularly associated with the remaining forests of Panay and Negros. 🦜🌳

The male Dulungan is recognizable by its rufous head and upper breast, yellow facial skin, and large reddish-orange bill and casque, contrasting with its mostly black body. Females are generally darker, making the species an interesting example of visible differences between males and females.

Dulungan depends heavily on mature forests, especially large trees with natural cavities for nesting. Like other hornbills, the female seals herself inside a tree cavity during nesting, leaving only a narrow opening through which the male delivers food. This extraordinary breeding behavior makes the survival of old and large forest trees especially important to the species.

Among its major threats are forest loss, degradation, hunting, and the disappearance of suitable nesting trees. Protecting the Dulungan therefore means protecting not only one bird, but also the forest ecosystem on which countless other species and communities depend. 🌿

Among the greatest threats to its survival are habitat destruction and poaching for the illegal pet trade. The loss of nesting and food-producing trees further reduces the places where these birds can successfully live and reproduce. 🌱𝗟𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗢🌊💚

Ngayong 𝗔𝗴𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, muling nagkaisa ang buong 𝗬𝗻𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 sa isang makabuluhang pagkilos para sa kalikasan sa pamamagitan ng 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝗨𝗕𝗔 — 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗔𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁-𝗮-𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, na isinagawa sa 𝗖𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗮𝘆, 𝗥𝗼𝘅𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘇.

Sa pagpapatuloy ng ating pangangalaga sa 𝗖𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲, isa na namang bahagi ng lugar ang ating in-adopt at pinagtamnan upang higit pang mapalawak ang ating pagkilos para sa ilog, baybayin, at mga yamang-buhay na umaasa rito. Sa araw na ito, sama-sama nating naitanim ang 𝟮𝟱𝟬 𝗯𝗮𝗸𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗻 (𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲)—250 munting punla na may malaking pangarap para sa isang mas luntian, mas matatag, at mas buhay na kinabukasan. 🌱🌊

Isinagawa ang Project SUBA kasabay ng 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, bilang pakikiisa ng Don Ynocencio A. Del Rosario National High School sa gawaing pangkalikasan na itinaguyod sa ilalim ng 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗺 𝗡𝗼. 𝟯𝟱𝟵, 𝘀. 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲. Sa pamamagitan nito, naipakita natin na ang mga layunin para sa pangangalaga ng kalikasan ay higit na nagiging makabuluhan kapag isinasabuhay sa pamamagitan ng sama-samang pagkilos.

Ang proyektong ito ay 𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻, 𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻, 𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗬𝗘𝗦-𝗢) ng 𝗗𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝗻𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗼 𝗔. At sa bawat kabataang nakilahok, may panibagong tinig na nagsasabing 𝗸𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗸𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝘁𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗮 𝗸𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗻—𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗸𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘁𝗼. 🌊💚

Ngunit ang tunay na hamon ay hindi ang pagtatapos ng planting activity.
𝗔𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘆 𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗴-𝗮𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮.

Dahil ang isang punla ay hindi agad nagiging bakawan. Ang isang tanim ay hindi agad nagiging gubat. At ang isang araw ng pagkilos ay hindi agad nagiging pagbabago.

Kailangan itong balikan.
Kailangan itong alagaan.
Kailangan itong protektahan.
Kailangan itong ipagpatuloy.

At dito nakasalalay ang puso ng 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝗨𝗕𝗔—hindi lamang ang magtanim, kundi ang 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘆 𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗸𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶 𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘂𝗵𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗮 𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻. 🌿

Isang araw, ang mga punlang itinanim natin ngayon ay maaaring maging matitibay na bakawan na nagbibigay-lilim, tahanan ng mga nilalang, panangga sa baybayin, at patunay ng isang henerasyong piniling kumilos.

At kapag dumating ang araw na iyon, maaalala natin na minsan, sa 𝗖𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿, may isang komunidad na nagsama-sama, yumuko sa lupa, humawak ng punla, at nagsabing:
