Iโve observed that many people today struggle to differentiate between whatโs real and whatโs fake. Social media has significantly influenced people, making them either blindly believe or outright dismiss content as staged.
One example was a CCTV footage showing a man seemingly attacking a couple inside a car while their daughter ran away. As I scrolled through the comments, I saw someone say, โContent lang yan,โ claiming it was just a staged video to gain engagement. However, that was a real incident.
Another case involved CCTV footage of two childrenโa seven-year-old boy and an infantโleft alone in a bedroom. Suddenly, a fire started, possibly due to a faulty phone charger. The older brother quickly unplugged the charger and poured water on the fire (thankfully, it was small). Still, it was incredibly irresponsible to leave them unattended.
At first, I admired the boyโs quick thinking and calmness. However, just yesterday, I came across another video with the same scenario but in a different room. Again, a brother and an infant were left alone when a fire broke outโthis time from a burning hair dryer or phone. The older brother quickly grabbed a small fire extinguisher and put out the flames. I mean, similar incidents can happen, but another identical situation with a brother and an infant? ๐ค It made me wonderโwere they intentionally placed there just to create content? What if the fire had gotten worse? Itโs incredibly irresponsible to risk lives for the sake of views.
In this modern world, I wonโt be a hypocrite and claim that I never post content for engagementโbecause I do. There was even a post that said, โPlease pray for Cebu. Vlogger na tanan.โ It sounded funny, but the truth is, many people are trying to find ways to earn as much as they can. Facebook encourages this by offering small earnings per view. But it should never come at the cost of endangering someoneโs life.
Nowadays, when incidents happen, people often take photos, record videos, or start a Facebook Live instead of helping. I admit Iโve been guilty of recording accidents while driving by, especially when I see wrecked vehicles causing traffic. I remember one particular incident where a van (or was it a bus? I canโt recall the full details) caught fire, and no one dared to approach it. The comments section was filled with angry reactions, questioning why no one helped when people were still inside.
The truth is, in situations like that, hesitation is understandable. Sometimes, rushing in to help can put you in danger as well. Thatโs why most people leave it to medical personnel or those trained to handle such emergencies. But in cases where no one is stepping up, I know I would.
At the end of the day, social media has become a powerful toolโone that can either inform and inspire or mislead and endanger. While content creation has given many people opportunities to earn and share their experiences, it should never come at the expense of truth, safety, or human lives. Some people go too far just to get views, even if it means putting others in danger. We need to be more discerning about what we see online, think critically before reacting, and, most importantly, remember our humanity. In moments of crisis, letโs choose to be responsibleโnot just as content creators, but as people who genuinely care for others.
