Hey fellow learners!

Higantes Festival is an annual festival held in Angono, Rizal. It is usually celebrated every 22nd and 23rd of November.

The hallmark of it has to be the parades of towering giants made of paper mâché. Some are as tall as 15 feet.

A giant, locally known as higantes, are designed to express a person’s character. And according to the locals, the practice began when the locals created a dummy portraying a mean landlord imposing his height and having foul mannerisms.

Using a paper mâché brings a creative recycling for the festival. It adds a reflection of the town’s artistic streak showing vibrant colors, vivacious crowds, and a sense of belonging for the locals.

✏️6L bottle (empty bottle of water)
✏️Balloon (circle style for the face)
✏️Balloons (long style for the arms)
✏️Cartolina (any color)
✏️Paper (for body, buttons, and other designs)
✏️Cardboard (for hands)
✏️Pair of goggly eyes
✏️Paint (pink, n**e, red, black)

A papier-mâché, literally means “mashed paper” or “chewed paper”, is an easy to make, hard material that can be used to cover various surfaces. It consist of paper pieces, like magazines, newspapers, or comics, and is bound with an adhesive such as glue, starch, or paste.
