How Young Dirk Destroyed Pippen in 1997
In the summer of 1997, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and Scottie Pippen were touring Europe as part of the "Nike Hoops" tour, which at one point took them to a remote town in Germany. As is typical in such situations, they decided to play an exhibition match against some local basketball players.
Pippen, considered one of the best defenders in the world at the time (eight-time NBA All-Defensive First Team), was given the task of guarding an anonymous young German who, at first glance, stood out only because of his height. Surprisingly, the young man torched Pippen throughout the entire first half โ scoring 25 points in just 20 minutes of play. Naturally, Jordan and Barkley didnโt miss the chance to tease their teammate: โYouโve got to try harder, stop him somehow. Arenโt you supposed to be the best defender in the world?โ
Motivated by their words, Pippen came back out determined to show the rookie how things are done โ but the kid kept lighting it up, finishing the game with 52 points, two of which came from a powerful dunk right over Barkley himself.
โI walked up to him and said, โWho the hell are you?โ He answered, โDirk Nowitzki, sir,โโ Barkley later recalled.
After a brief conversation, Barkley told the wunderkind that his place was across the ocean โ in college โ but the German replied that he had to serve in the military first, and would stay in his country until that was finished. Barkley thought this was a ridiculous idea and a waste of talent, so he immediately contacted Nike executives and pulled every possible string to try and get the kid into Auburn University, his own alma mater.
Still, Dirk resisted Barkleyโs pressure, played one more season in Germany, and waited until he was old enough to enter the draft.
The rest is history.
