Authorities treat this very seriously, especially if the rumor impacts public order, safety, or morals.

Penalties include:
• Up to 5 years in prison
• Fines of up to SR 3 million (≈ $800,000)
• Confiscation of the devices used
• Even publishing the court judgment in local media at the offender’s expense

These rules have been enforced in cases such as:
• False claims about canceled Riyadh Season concerts
• During COVID-19, when spreading misinformation about the virus carried fines of SR 100,000–1,000,000 and jail terms of 1–5 years

The government repeatedly warns citizens to verify news from official sources, since even a “harmless” forward of a rumor can lead to prosecution.
