The humpback anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsonii) is rarely seen in daylight, as it typically inhabits deep-sea waters ranging from 650 to 6,500 feet, where no sunlight reaches. Adapted to this pitch-black environment, it uses a bioluminescent lure to attract prey.

In February 2025, an unusual sighting of a humpback anglerfish occurred near Tenerife, close to Playa San Juan on the islandโ€™s west coast, approximately two kilometers from shore. Unfortunately, marine biologists noted that the fish was in poor condition, and it did not survive long, passing away just a few hours after being observed.
