Beneath the heart of Cebu runs the Central Cebu Fault System (CCFS) โ a potentially active network of faultlines that slices across the island. From north to south, it is made up of four giants: the Balamban Fault, Central Highland Fault, UlingโMasaba Fault, and LutacโJaclupan Fault.
The major faults in Cebu Island are collectively known as the Central Cebu Fault System (CCFS), identified by PHIVOLCS and researchers as potentially active.
Main Faults of the CCFS (north to south):
1. Balamban Fault โ runs along the western side of Cebu, near Balamban and Toledo.
2. Central Highland Fault โ passes through the mountainous spine of central Cebu.
3. Uling-Masaba Fault โ cuts across central Cebu near the Uling and Masaba areas.
4. Lutac-Jaclupan Fault โ located further south, crossing parts of Minglanilla, Naga, and Talisay.
Coverage ๐ฐ
These faults pass through or affect municipalities and cities such as:
Northern Cebu: Danao, Compostela
Central Cebu: Cebu City, Balamban, Toledo
Southern Cebu: Talisay, Minglanilla, Naga
According to PHIVOLCS, these hidden cracks in the earth pass directly through Danao, Compostela, Cebu City, Talisay, Minglanilla, Naga, Balamban, and Toledo โ places where thousands of Cebuanos live, work, and build their dreams.
Today, the CCFS lies quiet, but maps and studies remind us that it is still alive. Tools like the PHIVOLCS FaultFinder and the Maps Portal show us exactly where these faultlines rest โ a reminder that beneath Cebuโs beauty lies a silent threat, always waiting, always real
