PH Business Update: Aboitiz Airports, Telecom License Issue, Green Energy Boost & Market Update

Market Turmoil Amid Global Trade Winds: The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) experienced a sharp downturn today, its most significant drop since the COVID-19 pandemic, settling at the 5,800 level. This slump mirrors a global market reaction fueled by concerns over newly imposed tariffs by the United States. The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) has voiced strong concerns, urging the government to swiftly address potential economic repercussions. Investors are wary of the impact on global growth and corporate earnings, leading to increased market volatility.

Infrastructure Boost: Aboitiz to Operate Regional Airports: The Aboitiz Group is set to expand its infrastructure portfolio by taking over the operations of Laguindingan Airport in Northern Mindanao and the Bohol-Panglao International Airport within the first half of the year. This move signals a significant private sector investment aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and improving airport efficiency and passenger experience in these key tourism and economic hubs.

BPO Sector Active: Singaporean Firm Acquires US Counterpart: Singapore-based TDCX, a global customer experience solutions provider, has acquired American BPO firm Open Access BPO. This strategic acquisition will bolster TDCX's presence in the Philippines, leveraging the country's skilled workforce to enhance its service offerings to international clients. The deal underscores the continued attractiveness of the Philippine BPO sector for foreign investment and expansion.

Regulatory Watch: NOW Telecom Faces License Hurdle: NOW Telecom's future operations are under scrutiny as the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has revoked its operating license. The company has a 15-day window to appeal this decision. The reasons for the revocation remain to be fully disclosed, but this development introduces uncertainty into the telecommunications landscape and NOW Telecom's expansion plans.

Green Energy Push: NexGen Unit's Wind Projects Get Fast-Tracked: Airstream Renewables Corp., a subsidiary of NexGen Energy Corp., has received "green lane" certifications for its ambitious P300-billion wind power projects in Quezon province. This government initiative aims to expedite the approval processes for these significant renewable energy projects, highlighting the Philippines' commitment to clean energy and attracting investments in sustainable infrastructure. The projects promise to boost the country's renewable energy capacity and create economic opportunities in the region.

In Brief:

Fuel Prices: Minimal rollback on gasoline and kerosene; diesel prices unchanged.

Jobless Rate: Slight dip to 3.8% in February, but still higher year-on-year.

Peso Reserves: BSP reports a slight decline in gross international reserves for March.

Government Bonds: BTr fully awards reissued seven-year Treasury bonds.

Tourism & Trade Link: DOT and DTI sign agreement to boost tourism-related industries.

Stay tuned for more updates on these and other developing business stories in the Philippines.

From pen-and-paper to digital sari-sari store: How non-tech convenience store owners tap technology to streamline operations

Ruth Ocampo-Medalle, a 46-year-old mother of five, traditionally managed her sari-sari store in Maracas, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City using a pen, notebook, and considerable patience. Despite her limited tech knowledge, she has transitioned to using the Peddlr app, developed by Samar-native Nel Laygo, to optimize inventory management and streamline operations through her smartphone.

Medalle's challenges in keeping accurate manual records often led to stock shortages and lost sales opportunities. However, after her daughter introduced her to Peddlr, she began leveraging the app to improve her business processes significantly, achieving more reliable stock management and profit calculation.

Laygo's inspiration for creating Peddlr came from recognizing the struggles of many Filipino convenience store owners like Medalle. With over 1.3 million convenience stores across the Philippines, these businesses often fail due to poor inventory and profit monitoring. Peddlr, launched in July 2021, has garnered over two million downloads and features easy usability even without internet connectivity.
