COI Celebrates 26th Year with Bigger, Grander Fun Run

The Cebu Orthopaedic Institute (COI) will celebrate its 26th anniversary with another edition of its highly popular “COI Run,” scheduled for June 15, 2025, at Pescadores Road in Cebu Business Park.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, which featured both a run and a bike ride, the COI and partner organizer Coco Running aim to duplicate that success—this time focusing exclusively on a footrace.

To make the event more exciting and challenging, COI is introducing a 21-kilometer (KM) half marathon. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, runners may opt for 12K, 6K, or 3K categories.

With its goal of providing world-class orthopaedic care, COI sees this run as more than just a celebration—it’s a platform to advance multiple advocacies.

“The fun run was organized as a way to commemorate this event, and at the same time promote health, physical fitness and environmental awareness, all of which are ideals that COI strives to embody,” said Dr. Hester Renel Lim Palma, an orthopaedic surgeon of COI.

During last year’s silver anniversary, the event drew over 1,000 participants. This time, the organizers are targeting 1,500 to 2,000 runners.

“We recognize that physical fitness can be achieved in several ways. Running is not only accessible to all individuals of various ages and backgrounds, but it is also a cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly method to improve your overall health and well-being,” added Dr. Palma.

Running for a Cause

Adding a deeper purpose to the event, proceeds will be donated to the Missionaries of the Poor, benefiting children with physical and mental disabilities. Other portions of the proceeds will go to various medical organizations to support COI’s broader mission of promoting community health and wellness.

“Given the success of last year's event and an increase in the demand for another fun run this year, we are expecting close to 2000 participants,” added Palma.

Race Inclusions and Categories

To ensure a quality race experience, participants will receive a race shirt, bib, timing chip, drawstring bag, post-race meal, and a raffle stub. Finishers of the 21K category will also receive a finisher’s shirt.

Adding to the race day excitement, there will be sponsor booths and raffle prizes for everyone to enjoy.

Route and Safety

Veteran race director Joel Juarez of Coco Running shared that the official route will traverse Cebu City’s northern and southern thoroughfares. Safety is a priority, with route marshals, traffic enforcers, medical teams, and hazard cones deployed throughout the course.

To honor participants of all ages, the 21K race will also recognize top-performing runners across different age groups, including those in the 70-and-above category.

"We Figure It Out Together": Childlink Learning Center Stages Heartfelt Podcast-Themed Play

Excitement buzzed through the Marcelo Fernan Cebu Press Center as students, parents, and teachers gathered to witness an inspiring and one-of-a-kind school play: The LINKER Podcast Show. Presented by Childlink Learning Center, this year’s production transformed the venue into a vibrant, living podcast studio where the voices of youth took center stage.

Staged in a creative podcast-in-performance format, The LINKER Podcast Show offered more than just entertainment—it gave its young cast a platform to share stories that matter. With five pairs of high school students acting as podcast hosts, the play unfolded in segments, each one triggered by a heartfelt call or message from a younger student. These moments sparked candid conversations, moving musical numbers, and performances that tackled real-life topics with sincerity and optimism.

From themes of growing pains to climate change, the play covered a spectrum of emotions and experiences:

Maxine, a kindergartener adjusting to life as a big sister, learned how art, laughter, and stories can help her reconnect and feel seen.

Leon, a second-grader troubled by the climate crisis, was empowered to believe that small steps and community action can spark real change.

An anonymous student found strength in a message about self-worth and the importance of finding support in the face of bullying.

Nick, a fifth grader navigating the beginnings of a childhood crush, received guidance on self-awareness and patience.

And in a poignant finale, Brett, a graduating senior, was reminded that it’s perfectly okay not to have all the answers about the future.

Interwoven through the narrative were stirring musical performances, including renditions of “It Is What It Is,” “Brave,” “I Lived,” “Bestie,” and “High Hopes.” Each song deepened the emotional impact of its scene, brought to life by a talented ensemble of singers, dancers, and soloists. The show closed with a full-cast performance of “I’ll Stand by You”, leaving the audience teary-eyed and inspired.

At its heart, The LINKER Podcast Show celebrated the Childlink community’s commitment to empathy, courage, creativity, and unity. “No one has to go through life’s challenges alone,” one student host shared during the show. “We figure it out together.”

Indeed, with this innovative and heartfelt production, staged at the Marcelo Fernan Center, Childlink Learning Center once again proved that when young voices are given the stage—beautiful things happen.

Children's Paradise Montessori School Marks 20 Years of Transformative Education with 19th Commencement and Recognition & Recital Day

With its theme "Where innovation meets purpose and the child shapes the future," Children’s Paradise Montessori School (CPMS) celebrated its 20th anniversary at Summit Galleria Cebu on May 16, 2025 with the 19th Commencement Exercises and the Recognition and Recital Day. The event marked not just a graduation, but two decades of unwavering commitment to nurturing the child through a child-centered approach rooted in love, resilience, and purpose.

The commencement celebration in the morning was opened by a procession of the graduates of 2025 together with their proud parents, followed by an impactful opening speech by CPMS President Marivic Bathan. In her speech, she commemorated the school’s evolution from its early beginnings to what it proudly calls CPMS 2.0 — an institution that responds to the evolving needs of learners while remaining firm in its core philosophy of valuing each child as an individual.

“Our theme captures the story of our journey of transformation and resilience over the last two decades,” she shared. “We are ever-evolving, but are rooted in the same purpose: to love and value the child.”

CPMS alumni, whose journeys reflect the values instilled by the school, also shared inspiring testimonies during the event.

Rome Pesodas, a graduate from 2018 and a student who thrived with the support of CPMS’s inclusive practices for learners with ADHD and other neurodivergent conditions, recalled how he found a place where he was accepted. “Your differences aren’t just special,” he said. “They are powerful.”

Fellow alumni, Alexis Semilla, a CPMS pioneer and incoming fourth-year student at Ateneo de Manila University, credited the school for shaping her identity. She shared that CPMS didn’t just make her a student; it taught her how to be a lifelong learner—independent, curious, creative, disciplined, accountable, and organized. Her passions for music and theater arts which were fostered early on, led her to perform at the Australian International Music Festival and with Jose Mari Chan, and today she continues performing with Ateneo’s musical theater group.

At the heart of the celebration was the recognition of kindergarten graduates, who shared their dreams of what they want to become when they grow up.

The basic education graduates were acknowledged as well, with graduates like Peter Abadia, who spoke about overcoming the fear of not knowing and finding strength through persistence: “Don’t live this life without trying your best to fulfill your goals.” Fellow graduate John Arthur Allego also inspired his peers with a powerful reminder: “if you hit rock bottom, there is only one way left, and that is up.” Ma. Xandri Cataleya B. Lasco, the only rose among 9 graduates shared, "My journey in CPMS showed me that it's not always the prize or the destination. It's also about the journey, the process," and Jatuchai Luke Vatanagul, a patrol leader and Loyalty Awardee, who shared how taking on leadership roles helped him to overcome academic challenges and self-doubt, emphasizing that when you challenge yourself, you open the door to your highest capability.

In the afternoon, the school transitioned into a lively celebration of student talent and achievement during its Recognition and Recital Day. The celebration highlighted the holistic development of CPMS learners, honoring not just excellence in academics but also in talent and character.

Performances, including those by the CPMS Rondalla Ensemble and Children's Choir, reinforced the school’s commitment to the arts. What started in 2011 with just 10-15 students has grown into an award-winning group, earning gold at the Australian International Music Festival in 2017 and performing in Hong Kong in 2014.

The event also recognized the efforts of young scouts as they took oath, and were awarded with badges and certificates. The school’s participation in the Montessori Model United Nations, was also celebrated—where students tackled issues through position papers on the right to food, water scarcity, and more.

Best Buddies, a nonprofit that supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), also recognized the pioneering batch of Cebu ambassadors all from CPMS Alumni. Cael Bacaltos, Grade 5, shared a moving speech about how his awareness, acceptance of, and living with his own differences and challenges have transformed and empowered him and others to be kind and inclusive. This concretized the program’s impact.

As CPMS marks its 20th anniversary, the events of May 16 served as a powerful reminder of the school’s enduring commitment to the child. From academic to personal achievements, from commencement exercises to songs of joy, the day was a celebration of what makes CPMS unique: the belief that every child, when valued and understood, can shape the future.

In the words of CPMS President Marivic Bathan, “Let us celebrate, the future is today."

Shawarma Gourmet brand partner of CONPC for 25% discounts to active members

Shawarma Gourmet Restaurant at Escario Central, Cebu City is now a brand partner of the Cebu Online News Press Corps (CONPC) for a 25% discount to active members promoting the brand.

“Shawarma Gourmet is an authentic Lebanese Restaurant founded in 2013 with his Filipina-Cebuano wife in Dubai that offers authentic Lebanese and Turkish cuisine. The first branch opened at Park Mall, Cebu in 2015 with a second branch following in 2017. During COVID-19, we focused on delivery, operating from 10 am to 1 am daily,” Chef Mansour Houran and owner of Shawarma Gourmet said.

Chef Mansour bared that concerns of accessibility led them to depart the Industrial zone to relocate to the residentially populous, Cebu City at Escario Central Mall, redefining Shawarma Gourmet as a destination restaurant in Q3 of 2017.

Its decision to relocate gave Shawarma Gourmet brand a boon to be known and favored both by locals and tourists. Fast forward in the years 2019-2023, for five consecutive years, Shawarma Gourmet has consistently gained the Traveler's Choice Awardee with TRIPADVISOR and number four out of 757 restaurants in Cebu that made the restaurant part of the top 10% of the Restaurants in the world. “It defies the threats of both Covid19 and Super Typhoon Odette,” Chef Mansour added.

In 2022, Shawarma Gourmet landed the local BEST SHAWARMA Award with SunStar Cebu and RECOMMENDED by Restaurant Guru a global online restaurant aggregator that helps find the best restaurants in many places around the globe, Chef Mansour bared.

“We take pride in the quality of food that we serve and we value customer privacy as we cater to a mix of locals and expats. We have been serving Fresh Wholesome Goodness since 2015,” Chef Mansour smiled.

The Shawarma concepts and customer traffic

The concept of Shawarma Gourmet is a mix of Lebanese and Turkish cuisines, with a focus on authenticity. The term "shawarma" comes from the Turkish word "döner," which means a vertical skewer of minced meat.

Shawarma’s cultural and regional variations is known by different names in various countries, such as "doner" in Germany and "gyros" in Greece while in the Philippines, it is sometimes called "kebab barbecue" by Filipinos.

Chef Mansour said, the products used in Shawarma Gourmet are mostly sourced locally, with some spices and ingredients imported. Its menu is 99% original, with some minor adaptations to suit local tastes.

“There are challenges of introducing shawarma to the Filipino market, such as the strong garlic sauce and the inclusion of onions, parsley, and tomatoes. To cater to local preferences, Shawarma Gourmet introduced a rice meal option and we also offer a salad with mango and cheese to blend Lebanese and Filipino flavors,” Chef Mansour said.

The restaurant has a mix of customers, including Arabs and Filipinos, with a significant number of regular customers, Chef Mansour added that during the COVID-19 lockdown, the restaurant focused on delivery services, partnering with Grab and offering in-house delivery options.

Shawarma Gourmet Restaurant is open from 10 am to 1 am daily, with a peak delivery time from 10 am to 1 pm and the restaurant maintains a culture of privacy, ensuring that customers, including celebrities, can enjoy their food without interruptions.

Let’s dig in at Shawarma Gourmet’s food/meals

Currently Shawarma Gourmet has two outlets—the restaurant at Escario Central and a kiosk at the food hall at the Nustar Mall. The restaurant is a fine dining establishment while the kiosk offers a more casual dining experience.

A hotelier by profession, Chef Mansour developed a passion for food and has made small twists to the menu to appeal to local tastes.

During the MOA signing, guests were treated to Shawarma Gourmet’s flavorful Bento Box.

This delicious set features a satisfying combination of Beef and Chicken Shawarma, accompanied by tasty appetizers like spiced fries, Cheese Mousakhan, Beef Kibeh, and Mixed Meat Kibeh. It also comes with a refreshing salad and your choice of creamy Hummus or smoky Babaganoush—all perfectly complemented by Shawarma Gourmet’s signature house blend iced tea.
