CAPSOlympics 2026 Officially Kicks Off at University of San Carlos Downtown Campus!

The much awaited CAPSOlympics 2026 officially opened on May 8, 2026 at the University of San Carlos Downtown Campus, bringing together different universities in a vibrant celebration of pride, talent, and university spirit. CAPSOlympics Day 1 highlighted the dazzling CAPSO Ambassador competition, where CNU Polikratos emerged as champion, followed by USC CPSS as 1st Runner-up, and CTU Technolexians as 2nd runner up. The opening was filled with energy, confidence, and unity as candidates proudly represented their universities on stage.

Isang mapait at nandudurog na pahayag ng isang tsuper sa isang panayam. Ito ay sumasalamin sa malagim na katotohanan ng sambayanang Pilipino. Sa bawat ikot ng gulong sa lansangan, mula bukang-liwayway hanggang sa lagim ng dilim, pawis at pagod ang iniaalay kapalit ng kakarampot na kita. Sa gitna ng rumaragasang implasyon at walang habas na pagsirit ng presyo ng mga bilihin, 𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗮 𝗯𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗵𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆𝗮? Ang sagot ay isang mariing hindi. Maaaring maitawid ang isang araw, ngunit kapalit nito ay kumakalam na sikmura, pangambang walang humpay, at kinabukasang nababalot ng kawalang-katiyakan. Lalong pinatitindi ang pagtaas ng presyo ng petrolyo, na tila ba unti-unting inuubos ang kakarampot na kinikita ng mga maralita. Sa ganitong kalunos-lunos na kalagayan, ang mga marangal na manggagawa ang siyang unang binibiktima ng isang sistemang bulag at bingi sa kanilang hinaing. Ang krisis na ito ay hindi lamang usapin ng ekonomiya, kundi isang matinding sigaw para sa hustisya at pananagutan. Kung patuloy na magdurusa ang taumbayan, panahon na upang igiit ang kanilang tinig at singilin ang mga pinunong bigong gampanan ang kanilang sinumpaang tungkulin.

Hindi maitatanggi na ang patuloy na pagtaas ng implasyon ay isang mabigat na dagok sa buhay ng bawat karaniwang Pilipino, lalo na sa mga pamilyang kapos palad. Sa bawat pagtaas ng presyo ng pagkain, pamasahe, at iba pang pangunahing pangangailangan, unti-unting pinipiga ang kakayahan ng mamamayan na mabuhay nang may dignidad. Ang pag-akyat ng headline inflation sa 4.1 porsiyento noong Marso 2026 mula sa 2.4 porsiyento noong Pebrero ay hindi lamang simpleng estadistika, ito ay malinaw na patunay ng papatinding pasanin sa bulsa ng taumbayan. Higit pang nakababahala ang matinding pagtaas ng gastusin sa transportansyon, na sumiklab dahil sa krisis sa langis, dahilan upang lalo pang umigting ang bigat ng pamasahe at presyo ng mga bilihin. Ilan sa pangunahing sanhi nito ay ang biglaang pagtaas ng langis bunsod ng tensyon sa Middle East. May mga nagsasabing ang ganitong sitwasyon ay likas lamang sa galaw ng ekonomiya at maaaring panandalian. Subalit para sa milyun-milyong Pilipinong araw-araw na nakikipagsapalaran upang makatawid ang kanilang pamilya, ang krisis na ito ay hindi kailanman “panandalian.” Ito ay isang malinaw na paalala ng agarang pangangailangan para sa matatag, makatao, at mapanagutang askyon mula sa pamahalaan upang protektahan ang kapakanan at kinabukasan ng sambayanan.

Sa isang bansang patuloy na binabahiran ng korapsyon at kapabayaan, ang pinakamabigat na pasanin ng krisis ay laging ipinapasa sa mga mamamayang araw-araw nagsusumikap upang mabuhay. Sa gitna ng tumitinding implasyon at walang humpay na pagtaas ng presyo ng mga bilihin, malinaw na hindi sapat ang pananahimik. Hanggang kailan natin hahayaan ang pang-aapi ng ating karapatan at ang pagkait ng marangal na pamumuhay? Panahon na upang tumindig, magsalita, at igiit ang nararapat para sa bawat Pilipino.

Sa mga pinunong may hawak ng kapangyarihan, ano na? 𝗞𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗸𝗮𝘆𝗼, 𝗸𝗮𝗺𝗶 𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶. Ito na ang oras ng inyong pananagutan. Kumilos kayo nang may malasakit at agarang tugunan ang paghihirap ng taumbayan. Sa bawat Pilipinong lumalaban nang patas, tama na ang pagbubulag-bulagan. Panahon nang harapin ang katototohanan. Huwag tayong tumigil hangga’t hindi nila nararamdaman ang hirap ng kumikita ng tatlong daang piso sa isang araw. Responsibilidad ng nasa upuan ang agapan, hindi palalain ang ating kalagayan. Think of it as a set of core beliefs about how society should run – what’s fair, how power should work, and what kind of world we want to build. From ideas about freedom to views on tradition, ideologies shape how we see events and guide the choices leaders and communities make every day.

Maybe you think everyone should have equal access to healthcare and education – that’s part of an ideology. Or perhaps you believe strongly in keeping long-standing traditions and letting people make their own choices without too much government involvement – that’s another way ideology shows up.

It influences everything from the laws we make here in our city to how we respond to things happening across the Philippines and around the world. Different groups have different ideologies, and that’s why we often have lively conversations about the best ways to build a better community for all of us.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲.

Preparedness exists, but the seed of greed is overwhelming. Countless casualties were found across the municipalities and cities of Cebu, and retrieval operations continue for those swept away by the floods caused by Typhoon Tino. When Tino poured its relentless rain, the floodwaters did not simply come from heavy rains—they came from the depths of treachery.

The Cebuanos were prepared; we have always been. We know how to trim towering trees, secure our roofs with heavy weights, and especially to look after one another when disaster strikes. But no amount of collective vigilance can withstand the silent storm brewed within the government—a storm of overpriced projects, missing funds, and flood control measures that exist only on massive tarpaulins featuring the faces of politicians masked by “This is where your taxes go.” The storm did not fail us—our leaders did.

It was not just the full force of nature that drowned the streets of Talisay, Mandaue, Consolacion, Liloan, Compostela, and Cebu City. It was the greed of perpetrators who swallowed more than ₱26 billion allocated funds for flood control projects. Let us be clear: the storm did not destroy our homes alone—corruption did. The drainage systems and disaster preparedness plans meant to protect our communities were either poorly executed or never built at all. These so-called “completed infrastructures” collapsed faster than the people’s patience. Where were the billions for strengthening waterways? Where were the developed drainage systems? Where were the elevated embankments? Were they used for flood control, or for trips to Europe?

We hear the same narrative after every calamity: “Bangon Cebu!” But how many times must we hear it? How many bodies must we witness before our eyes are opened? How many times must we rise from the ruins caused by the thieves who robbed us blind that urge resilience? We have been weaponizing “resilience” for too long. It is time to demand accountability. Accountability is not vengeance—it is justice.

Cebuanos deserve to know the names of those who signed off on ghost projects, not as leaders but as perpetrators. The message must be clear: return what was stolen, repair what was sabotaged, and face the consequences of betraying the public trust.

The damage was not inevitable. The fury of floodwaters will eventually calmly recede, but the memory of the diverted funds and lost lives must not. 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙤𝙣 𝘾𝙚𝙗𝙪. 𝙄𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙬: 𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙡. The stage at Inday Pining Theatro hummed with excitement as the opening event of Political Science Days launched—the search for the Political Science Ambassador 2026. Candidates stepped forward ready to showcase not just who they are as students, but as voices for their peers. By the end of the morning on February 26, 2026, one name rose above the rest: James Kenneth Diaz, crowned Political Science Ambassador 2026.

Representing the House of Ravenclaw (Political Science 2-A1), Diaz captured attention with his calm confidence and genuine presence. He didn’t simply walk the stage—he connected with the audience and judges through sincerity, intelligence, and courage.

His defining moment came during the Question and Answer portion, when asked how he would strengthen enforcement of laws protecting the LGBTQ+ community in the Philippines. Diaz spoke from the heart:

Diaz’s advocacy for voter education further underscores his commitment to leadership that transcends the stage. For him, being Political Science Ambassador is not just about representing his peers—it’s about empowering them to act, speak up, and drive meaningful change.

He also earned the People’s Choice Award, a testament to the support of his blockmates and peers. Other candidates were recognized for their outstanding talents: Sergie Nicolie Igot, 1st Runner-Up, took home Best in Production Number; while Clyte Dane Banguin, 2nd Runner-Up, earned Best in Advocacy and Best in Formal Attire.

The panel of judges—Mr. Jude Andre, Ms. Marzon Jaye, and Ms. Edmie Rocsan—carefully evaluated each candidate to ensure the winner embodied the qualities expected of a Political Science Ambassador.

As the first event of Political Science Days, the competition set the tone for the celebrations to follow. For Diaz, the crown is more than recognition—it’s a chance to use his voice, represent his peers, and inspire change. Some victories are not defined by a single moment, but by the consistency, courage, and voice shown from start to finish. This was the hallmark of the Political Science Days pageant held on February 27, 2026, at the Inday Pining Theatro, University of the Visayas, where Anna Paulyn Cantoja was crowned Miss Political Science 2026.

Representing the House of Candor (Political Science 2-A2), Cantoja stood among nine candidates who each brought unique advocacies and strengths to the stage. From the opening segments to the final crowning, she carried herself with quiet confidence—drawing attention through her natural composure and sincerity.

Her answer reflected both awareness and responsibility—not just as a candidate, but as a Political Science student who understands the realities of governance and the role of citizens. This awareness extended to her advocacy, “Bangon Cebu,” which focuses on compassion and collective resilience.

Cantoja’s dominant performance earned her several major awards, including Best in Production, Best in Sportswear, Best in Long Gown, Social Media Choice Award, and People’s Choice Award.

The evening also celebrated other standout students. Angel Kate Dovibar was named Miss CAS Political Science Representative, earning the Best in Advocacy award with her strong presence. Rounding out the court were Daisy Jane Giduqio (1st Runner-Up), Clyde Empeño (2nd RunnerUp), and Erica Garsola (3rd Runner-Up).

The candidates were evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges: Ms. Jocel Descartin, Ms. Megan Gail Amoin, Mr. Renzo Luzon, Mr. Fergus Johann Senaca, and Mr. Chester Teves.

More than a showcase of elegance, the Miss Political Science 2026 pageant highlighted the intellectual potential of the students. For Cantoja, the crown is not merely a title, but a platform; it marks the beginning of her journey as a dedicated voice for the Political Science community.

“Wala pa ako sa tamang edad para makialam sa politika.”
“Hindi naman kami apektado sa isyu na ’yan, bakit pa ako sasali?”
“Marami na akong personal na problema, bakit ko pa iintindihin ang politika?”

𝗠𝗴𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆𝗮𝗿 𝗻𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘆𝗮, 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗯𝗮?

Pero bakit kapag lubak-lubak ang kalsada, agad tayong nagrereklamo? Kapag bagsak ang sistema ng edukasyon, o kulang ang pasilidad sa ospital, bakit tayo nagagalit? Kapag hindi natatanggap ang ayuda o hindi patas ang pamamahagi, bakit tayo nagtatanong ng hustisya?

Ang totoo, lahat ng ito ay pulitika. Ang edukasyon ng kabataan, ang kalidad ng health care, ang mga gusaling pinapasukan natin, ang mismong trabahong bumubuhay sa atin, lahat iyan ay produkto ng mga desisyon ng pamahalaan. Politika ang nagtatakda kung makatao ba ang lipunang ginagalawan natin. Kaya walang dahilan para umiwas o manahimik. Karapatan at tungkulin ng bawat mamamayan ang makialam, dahil dito nakasalalay ang ating kinabukasan.

Ayon sa datos ng Philippine Statistics Authority, mahigit 19.99 milyon na Pilipino ang nananatiling nasa ilalim ng poverty threshold noong 2021. Ibig sabihin, halos isa sa bawat anim na Pilipino ang hindi sapat ang kita para matustusan ang pangunahing pangangailangan. Ang estadistikang ito ay malinaw na paalala: ang kahirapan ay realidad, at ang pagbabago ay nakasalalay sa ating pagkilos at pakikilahok sa lipunan.

Ang pakikibaka ay hindi lamang karapatan—ito ay responsibilidad. Kung may pribilehiyo ka na hindi ramdam ang bigat ng kakulangan, paano naman ang nakararami? Paano ang milyon-milyong Pilipino na halos mapatid na ang boses sa panawagang makatao, makatarungan, at makabuhay na lipunan?

Ang pakikibaka ay hindi lamang para sa sarili; ito ay para sa nakararami. Hindi ito laban sa isa o dalawang tao, kundi laban sa sistemang nagpapabaya sa karapatan at kapakanan ng bawat mamamayan. Kung patuloy tayong mananahimik, kung patuloy nating ipagpapaliban ang ating partisipasyon, ang mga desisyon na humuhubog sa ating buhay ay maiiwan sa iilan lamang—at kadalasan, sa mga walang malasakit sa nakararami.

Ang tunay na pagbabago ay nagsisimula sa pagkilala na ang politika ay hindi malayo o hiwalay sa ating pang-araw-araw na buhay. Ang bawat boto, ang bawat pahayag ng opinyon, at ang bawat pagtutol sa katiwalian ay hakbang patungo sa mas makatarungan at mas makataong lipunan. Karapatan nating humingi ng pananagutan; tungkulin nating tiyakin na ang boses ng nakararami ay naririnig at pinakikinggan.

Ang laban na ito ay hindi laging madali. Kakailanganin nito ng tiyaga, determinasyon, at pagkakaisa. Ngunit sa bawat hakbang na ating ginagawa, sa bawat boses na ating itinataguyod, lumalapit tayo sa lipunang pantay-pantay, makatao, at may malasakit sa lahat. Hindi sapat na tayo ay nakakaligtas sa araw-araw; dapat nating tiyakin na ang bawat Pilipino ay may karapatang mabuhay nang may dignidad at pag-asa.

Kaya’t huwag na nating ipagpaliban pa.𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺—𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴. Sa ating pagkilos, sa ating paninindigan, nagsisimula ang tunay na pagbabago.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬, 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬: 𝐔𝐕 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬

Members of the University of the Visayas (UV) Debate Team earned recognition at the First Central Visayas Human Rights Debate Cup through their strong individual performances. Their speaker rankings reflected not only skill and preparation, but also quiet discipline and commitment to continuous improvement—values that guided the team throughout the competition.

From Team A, Marielle Angela Refuelo emerged as one of the tournament’s top speakers, ranking Overall Top 9 and College Category Top 4. Her calm delivery, clear reasoning, and consistency across rounds stood out among a competitive field. Alexander Era Cas followed closely, earning an Overall Top 12 ranking and College Category Top 7, showing steady leadership and reliability in every debate he took part in.

Jared Lorell Sarocam also contributed significantly, placing Overall Top 35 and College Category Top 14. His performance reflected adaptability and thoughtful engagement with the motions. Kristel Maye Torres recorded a 75 average score across two rounds, offering dependable support and composure during crucial moments for the team.

Team B likewise demonstrated commendable effort and growth. Aleah Rosios ranked Overall Top 14 and College Category Top 8, showing confidence and clarity in her arguments. Angel Kate Dovibar earned an Overall Top 43 ranking and College Category Top 20, while Jr Layos placed Overall Top 63 and College Category Top 22—both reflecting perseverance and steady development throughout the tournament.

Jamarah Donal played an important supporting role as a reserve debater for Team B. Her willingness to assist in preparation and remain ready when needed highlighted the value of teamwork and shared responsibility beyond the debate floor.

Taken together, these achievements reflect the collective effort of the UV Debate Team. Through patience, discipline, and mutual support, the debaters represented the University of the Visayas with humility and quiet confidence, earning recognition while continuing to grow in their craft.
