The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced that several notable astronomical events are expected to occur throughout May 2026, giving skywatchers multiple opportunities to observe celestial activity.
Among the highlights is the Eta Aquariid meteor shower, one of the more active annual meteor displays. It is projected to peak in the early days of May, with as many as 40 meteors per hour potentially visible under dark and clear skies. However, viewing conditions may be less favorable due to the brightness of a waning gibbous moon during the peak period, which could reduce meteor visibility.
Another less intense meteor shower—the Eta Lyrids—is also expected within the same timeframe. This event will be active from early to mid-May, reaching peak activity around May 8. Compared to the Eta Aquariids, it is anticipated to produce fewer meteors per hour, making it a more modest display for observers.
In addition to the meteor showers, PAGASA reported that May will feature a rare occurrence known as 'blue moon.' This phenomenon happens when two full moons appear within a single calendar month. The first full moon is expected early in May, while the second, classified as the blue moon, will occur toward the end of the month. Despite its name, the moon will retain its usual color.
PAGASA noted that while these events present exciting opportunities for astronomy enthusiasts, actual visibility will depend on local weather conditions and cloud cover. Clear skies and minimal light pollution are expected to provide the best viewing experience.
