Part I

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur — The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) once again proved its legacy of excellence as it honored its new batch of Registered Medical Technologists through a testimonial program held on September 10, 2025, at the UNP Gymnasium.

The celebration began with a Holy Mass, offering thanksgiving for the achievement of the passers, followed by a pride-filled parade that passed through the towns of Vigan, Caoayan, Bantay, San Vicente, and Sta. Catalina. The parade symbolized not just the victory of the passers but also the honor they bring to UNP and the community it serves.

The formal program opened with the inspiring words of Mr. Ace Danielle C. Avero, Program Head of the BSMLS, followed by the much-awaited presentation of the board passers, where they were awarded certificates and tokens in recognition of their hard work and perseverance.

Dr. Joussie B. Bermio, Dean of the College of Health Sciences, shared a message highlighting the dedication and resilience of the new professionals. This was followed by a heartfelt toast led by Dr. Carmela M. Florentino, raising symbolic words for the bright futures ahead of the passers.

In his message, Dr. Rolando B. Navarro, EdD, reminded the new Medical Technologists of their role beyond passing the board exam: “𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘙𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴,” he emphasized, pointing to the noble duty of serving people with skill and integrity.

Adding a personal touch, selected passers gave inspiring messages, reflecting their struggles, triumphs, and gratitude to their mentors, families, and the university. The atmosphere was filled with pride as Mr. Theo Mar Christian Caypuno delivered his salutations, while Mr. Daniel Albolero gave his closing remarks, officially ending the celebration with hope and encouragement.

More than a recognition of professional success, the testimonial served as a reminder that behind every license is a story of sacrifice, perseverance, and dreams fulfilled—stories that UNP continues to nurture with great heart and mind.

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) recently marked its 60th Diamond Jubilee with a grand celebration highlighting "𝟲𝟬 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨."

The event kicked off with a powerful drumroll performed by the UNP marching band, setting a festive tone. Ms. Angelica T. Arquenis, the master of ceremonies, then guided the program, which included a welcome from Vice President Rolando Navarro. He emphasized that the celebration honored not only the years that have passed but also the core values that have shaped the institution. Atty. Jonalyn Almachar further enriched the event by presenting a historical reading of the university's journey.

A highlight of the jubilee was the inspiring address by UNP President, Dr. Erwin F. Cadorna. He encouraged the community to view the celebration as both a "𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚." He also urged everyone to uphold their commitment to cultivating individuals of character and confidence, intensify the quest for truth and innovation, and ensure UNP continues to be a "𝙗𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙤𝙥𝙚" for the nation. The formal speeches were complemented by a vibrant cultural performance from the Danggay Saririt Dance Troupe.

The jubilee concluded with a powerful display of school spirit. Following a brief, interactive dance number, the event culminated in a unity walk. Each college and organization participated with enthusiasm, presenting their unique yells in a collective showcase of pride and solidarity. This final act brought the community together, solidifying the celebration's theme of unity and marking a memorable milestone in UNP's history.

The 3rd Laboratory Coat and Pinning Ceremony of the Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science program will be held tomorrow, 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 at 𝟴:𝟯𝟬 𝗔𝗠 at the 𝗨𝗡𝗣 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘂𝗺, marking a significant milestone for MLS students as they formally embrace their calling in the medical profession.

𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 || 𝗖𝗛𝗦 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗡 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆

The College of Health Sciences (CHS) was awarded First Place in the Kultura at Sining: ASEAN Booth Display in celebration of Buwan ng ASEAN 2025, held on August 27, 2025, with the recognition formally conferred on September 1, 2025.

The victory was made possible under the leadership of 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗲 𝗕. 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗼, Dean of the College, together with the College of Health Sciences Student Organization (CHSSO) officers headed by Governor 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮. Their collective commitment and organizational excellence ensured the successful representation of CHS in the university-wide competition.

Faculty researchers from the College of Health Sciences garnered distinction for the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) by securing the 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆 at the 8th Regional Research Congress, conducted at UNP on August 14–15, 2025.

The victorious team, consisting of 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗔𝗹𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗼 𝗩. 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝘂𝘇 (Assistant Dean), 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗠. 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗼, 𝗠𝗿. 𝗔𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗖. 𝗔𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗼 (Coordinator of the BSMLS Program), and 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝘁. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗩. 𝗔𝗹𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗼 (Internship Coordinator), showcased their research entitled “𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘿𝙞𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙣𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙖 𝙨𝙚𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙚 (𝗗𝘂𝗺𝗯 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗲) 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗳 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝙋𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙖 𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙖 (𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹).”

This study examined the escalating agricultural issue posed by the golden apple snail (𝘗𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢), a notable pest that inflicts damage on rice fields and other crops. The researchers explored the molluscicidal properties of the 𝘋𝘪𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘦 plant, or Dumb Cane, thereby advancing the quest for sustainable, plant-derived alternatives to assist farmers in pest management and diminish dependence on synthetic chemical pesticides.

The recognition underscores the CHS faculty members' robust dedication to research and innovation, especially in promoting studies that integrate health, environment, and community development. Their efforts further the overarching objectives of fostering ecologically sustainable practices and harmonizing with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those pertaining to food security, health, and responsible consumption.

The 8th Regional Research Congress convened researchers and professionals from Region I to present innovative research across several disciplines. Securing the Best Paper Award amidst a multitude of competitive submissions signifies the academic distinction and research prowess of CHS Faculty at UNP.

This accomplishment highlights the increasing contributions of the College of Health Sciences to natural product research and motivates both teachers and students to persist in conducting significant and socially pertinent inquiries that tackle local and global issues.

The Region I Midwives Summit, held on August 30 at the 11th Floor of Levo Hotel San Vicente, Urdaneta City, served as a venue to celebrate leadership and excellence in midwifery practice and education.

One of the summit’s highlights was the recognition of 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗲 𝗕. 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗼, Dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP), as the 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜.

Dr. Bermio’s achievement reflects her unwavering dedication to advancing maternal and child health, as well as her strong commitment to developing future generations of healthcare professionals. Her leadership in both the academe and the midwifery community has been instrumental in promoting quality education, professional growth, and service-oriented healthcare.

Her recognition stands as a testament not only to her personal excellence but also to the collective achievements of the UNP-CHS in strengthening its role as a leading institution in health sciences education in the region.

𝙐𝙧𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙩𝙖 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙮, 𝙋𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙣 — 𝘼𝙪𝙜𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝟯𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱. The Region I Midwives Summit was held on the 11th Floor of Levo Hotel San Vicente, Urdaneta City, bringing together midwives and health professionals from across Northern Luzon for a day of collaboration, professional development, and leadership renewal.

A highlight of the summit was the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected officers of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) IMAP Chapter, as well as the induction of selected UNP officers into the IMAP Region I leadership.

TThe College of Health Sciences of the University of Northern Philippines, conducted a basic rescue training on splinting and carries in August 26, 2025 at Barangay Nagsincaoan as part of its continuing extension initiatives.

The activity forms part of the memorandum of agreement between UNP and Barangay Nagsincaoan that took effect on October 16, 2024 signed by UNP President Dr. Erwin Cadorna and Punong Barangay Modesto Bringas, which obliges the University to conduct training on disaster risk reduction and management, basic life support, basic first aid and rescue operations. The MOA also covers the conduct of health, technological, educational, economic, and business management training programs, as well as capability-building activities for barangay officials and residents.

𝗕𝗔𝗞𝗔𝗦 𝗡𝗚 𝗡𝗔𝗞𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗔𝗡
Sa bawat pintang obra, gaya ng "𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙚𝙨" ni Juanito Torres, muling nabubuhay ang alaala ng ating mga bayani. Ang kanilang mukha, tapang, at sigaw ng kalayaan ay nananatiling gabay sa kasalukuyan.

𝗗𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗔𝗬 𝗡𝗔 𝗕𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗡𝗜
Hindi lamang sila ang mga pangalan sa aklat, kundi ang mga Pilipinong nagbuwis ng sarili para sa bayan, mula sa mga kilalang pinuno hanggang sa mga di-kilalang mandirigma, ina, at manggagawa na nag-iwan ng pamana ng sakripisyo.

𝗣𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗚𝗔𝗡
Ngayong Araw ng mga Bayani, ating isapuso na ang kabayanihan ay hindi natatapos sa kanilang panahon. Ito ay nagpapatuloy sa bawat g**o, manggagamot, estudyante, at mamamayang may malasakit at paninindigan.

𝗞𝗔𝗦𝗔𝗬𝗦𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗡 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡
Tulad ng larawang nakasabit sa dingding ng ating alaala, ang kanilang kabayanihan ay hindi malilimutan. Sa bawat kilos ng katapatan, tayo rin ay nagiging bahagi ng isang makasaysayang pamana sa kasalukuyan.
