7th ARCen 46th Reservist Week Highlights Unity, Skill, and Service

By Mark Navales

Panabo City — In commemoration of the 46th National Reservist Week, the 7th Air Reserve Center (ARCen), under the leadership of Col. Mark Allan I. Gavilan PAF (GSC), successfully held the “Reservist Challenge 2025” and the first-ever “The Amazing Race.”

The annual Reservist Challenge served as the opening event, while the G***k Challenge marked the finale. The series of squadron-based competitive games aimed to strengthen camaraderie, teamwork, and esprit de corps among Philippine Air Force (PAF) Reservists from Regions XI, XII, and Cotabato City (BARMM).

The culminating activity took place at the Panabo Gym Coliseum, with Brigadier General Joselito Lopena PAF, Deputy Commander of the Air Force Reserve Command, as the guest of honor and speaker. He was warmly introduced by Col. Gavilan.

Col. Gavilan expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Air Force Reservists for their unwavering support, describing them as a vital force multiplier that boosts the operational capability of the 7th ARCen.

“We are strengthening our campaign to build ready and skilled Reservists—readily recallable, updated with current trends, and seamlessly integrated with the regular forces,” he said.

The 7th ARCen, in partnership with the Lyceum of the Philippines–Davao, also staged its annual Reservist Challenge at the university’s world-class campus. The opening program was graced by Dr. Jayson M. Barlan, LPU-Davao Vice President and COO. The event, facilitated by ROTC cadets, ARCen personnel, and partner teams, featured six squadrons competing in activities such as Close Quarter Battle simulations, VIP rescue, combat search-and-rescue, rifle assembly, and mental challenges.

The competition emphasized discipline, skills, and unity, with each team proudly representing their respective squadrons. The event was further supported by the CRAFT Learning Hub and Ground Zero X-Tactical team, with sportsmanship leadership provided by Lt. Col. Paul Fudotan PAF (GSC) (Res), OIC of the 7th Air Force Wing Reserve.

In his keynote address, BGen. Lopena commended the innovative approach of the “Reservist Challenge,” calling it not just a milestone but a reaffirmation of service and dedication.

“As we honor the milestones of the 7th ARCen, let us remember that an anniversary is not merely a celebration; it is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to growth, progress, and making a positive impact. The achievements we’ve recognized today, from innovative training to community outreach, are not just accomplishments; they are an affirmation of our shaped purpose and dedication to nation-building,” he said.

As part of its Civil-Military Operations (CMO) initiative, the 7th ARCen, together with the 7th Air Force Wing Reserve (AFWR), also spearheaded a joint medical and dental outreach at the Davao Penal Colony, extending assistance to 400 persons deprived of liberty.

The celebration concluded with the fifth and final event, a Rifle and Pistol Marksmanship Relay, held at the Panabo City Firing Range. The relay immediately followed the 21st Founding Anniversary program of the 7th ARCen at the Panabo City Multi-Purpose Tourism, Cultural, and Sports Center.

Citizen-Soldiers: Vital Pillars of Defense Highlighted in Reservist Week Celebration

By Mark Navales

Cotabato City - The 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division joined the nationwide celebration of the 46th National Reservist Week through its Reservists Day on September 13, 2025, recognizing the vital role of military reservists in peace and national development under the theme “Katuwang sa Kapayapaan at Kaunlaran ng Bagong Pilipinas.”

Major General Donald M. Gumiran, Commander of the 6th Infantry Division (6ID) and Joint Task Force Central, led the event, which honored the invaluable contributions of the reserve force and ROTC cadets. Once seen only as a strategic backup, the Reserve Force has now evolved into an operational and indispensable component of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), embodying the nation’s “Total Force” concept.

The celebration opened with a flag-raising ceremony, during which Col. Ruben Aquino, Assistant Division Commander for Reservist and Retiree Affairs, read a message from the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Reserve Force Development, J9 AFP. Senior officers, including 12th RCDG Commander Col. Florendo P. Politud Jr. and 16th RCDG BARMM Commander Col. Moh-Yusop R. Hasan, along with hundreds of reservists and ROTC cadets, were in attendance.

During the program, Col. Aquino addressed the contingent composed of 1,077 reservists from the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine reserve units, alongside 1,018 ROTC cadets. He commended their unity and commitment.

“Gatherings like this remind us that the Reserve Force is a vital pillar of national defense — and your commitment strengthens the readiness and resilience of our Armed Forces. Their presence here today is a meaningful gesture that highlights the strength, discipline, and commitment of our citizen-soldiers. It serves as a testament to the vital role of the reserve force in supporting the mission of the Armed Forces and in safeguarding our nation.” Aquino said.

The day’s highlight featured an air maneuver demonstration by an MG attack helicopter of the Philippine Air Force, complemented by an artillery fire demonstration from the 1st Sultan Kudarat Ready Reserve Battery, 1202nd CDC, under the training and supervision of the 6th Field Artillery Battalion led by Lt. Col. Tara Cayton. The display captivated thousands of spectators and underscored the operational readiness of the reserve force. Among the distinguished guests who witnessed the event was Brig. Gen. Hubert S. Acierto, Commander of the Army Artillery Regiment.

In his keynote message, MGen Gumiran lauded the reservists’ service and sacrifice:

“This day is not just a celebration but a recognition of your dedication to stand ready—citizens who willingly accept the duty to serve so our people may sleep more securely. You are the living bridge between the military and the people. We will continue to strengthen programs that empower and integrate our reservists.”

To symbolize the division’s commitment, MGen Gumiran handed over a set of philarpat military uniforms to Col. Labutong, Commander of the 2203rd Ready Reserve Brigade, for distribution to reservists.

Other activities included a License to Own and Possess Fi****ms (LTOPF) caravan in partnership with the Regional Civil Security Group Police Regional Office–BAR, headed by Police Lt Col. Christopher Natnat, a static display, photo exhibits, and a West Philippine Sea awareness campaign.

The event gathered a total of 2,151 reservists and cadets alongside AFP officers, enlisted personnel, stakeholders, and media. It reaffirmed the unity and strength of the Reserve Force as an essential partner of the AFP in promoting peace, security, and development.

Army, M**F Seal Peace Deal to End Clan Feuds in Maguindanao Del Sur

By Mark Navales

Cotabato City — Brigadier General Edgar L. Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry (Unifier) Brigade, spearheaded the settlement of long-standing Rido (clan feuds) on August 17, 2025, in the province of Maguindanao Del Sur, with the support of Governor Datu Ali Midtimbang.

Among the disputes resolved were the conflict between Commander Zainodin Kiaro of the M**F 118th Base Command and Commander Gani Adam of the 128th Base Command, as well as the feud involving Commander Ali P. Damsik, also known as “Boy Trenta,” and Commander Samad Simpal, both under the 118th Base Command of the M**F–BIAF, led by Commander Walid Tundok.

Senior Moro Islamic Liberation Front–Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (M**F–BIAF) leaders also attended the settlement, including 118th Base Commander Uztads Abdul Wahid Tundok and 128th Base Commander Uztads Yasser Abdulkadir.

Sub-leaders from the 118th Base Command, who were directly involved in the disputes, swore on the Qur’an to end hostilities and honor the peace pact. Among them were Razak Ismael, Mando Taha, Salipada Samad, Rasul Taha, Alimudin Kimbon, Abdul Abdulpatah, Muhidin Simpal, Pait Mohamad, Bano Mohamad, Dawi Murita, Datu Adam, Naser Hansa, Muhidin Abilusa, Ismael Manap, Norben Salik, Saparudin Mohamadali, Gani Guiaman, Nordz Tasil, Rasid Adam, and Kiti Silongan.

The settlement was witnessed by Police Brigadier General Jaysen De Guzman, Police Regional Director for BARMM; Police Colonel Sultan Salman Sapal, Provincial Director of PNP Maguindanao del Sur; MP Butch Malang of the BTA-BARMM and M**F Peace Panel; Board Member Yasser Ampatuan; Datu Anggal Midtimbang, Mayor Nathanel Midtimbang; and several battalion commanders based in the province.

BGen. Catu stressed that Rido brings no good, especially to civilians whose lives and livelihoods are disrupted.

“We will not hesitate to use appropriate force against violators. You will become targets of our operations in coordination with the police if the conflict continues and the agreement is breached. May this be the end of hostilities so that we can unite for a stable and prosperous community. I fully support the decision to remove from the M**F–BIAF anyone who defies this agreement,” Catu said.

Police BGen. De Guzman also assured full support for the settlement, particularly in maintaining peace and order in the province. He warned that anyone proven to reignite hostilities would face legal action.

For his part, Governor Midtimbang underscored that cooperation and reconciliation are key to lasting peace.

“I urge both sides to fulfill and internalize all the agreements to finally end misunderstandings and to respect the civilians who are caught in the middle of the conflict,” the governor said.

MP Butch Malang, Chairman of the M**F Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (M**F–CCCH), reminded both groups that their previous path was wrong and that disputes must be ended before members risk expulsion from the organization.

Meanwhile, Uztads Abdul Wahid Tundok highlighted the importance of forgiveness:

“A true Muslim knows how to forgive. I will not tolerate any of my men if this conflict repeats. Whatever is agreed upon must be honored and implemented,” he said.

Major General Donald M. Gumiran, Commander of the 6th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Central, has likewise been actively pushing for the resolution of Rido in his area of responsibility, emphasizing peace, reconciliation, and community cooperation in finding long-term solutions.

601st Brigade Sharpens Artillery Skills with Live Fire Drills in Central Mindanao

By Mark Navales

Cotabato City – The 601st Unifier Brigade, led by Brigadier General Edgar Catu, conducted a series of intensive training activities, including External Security Operations (ESO) Training and Live Fire Exercises (LFX), from August 6 to 16, 2025, at Tapat Hill, Brgy. Meta, Datu Unsay, Maguindanao Del Sur.

One of the highlights was the LFX, which featured the brigade’s 105mm howitzers and 81mm/60mm mortars from maneuver units under its operational control (OPCON).

BGen. Catu praised the soldiers’ precision, adaptability, and commitment during the high-level drills.

“This kind of training not only strengthens our capability as a unit but also reinforces our commitment to defend our communities against any threat. The excellence and dedication of our artillery troops serve as a pillar of our operations, proving that the 601st Brigade is always ready to uphold peace and order in Maguindanao Del Sur and across Central Mindanao,” Catu said.

Lt. Col. Tara Cayton, commander of the 6th Field Artillery Battalion, stressed that the exercises were designed to enhance the operational readiness of both organic and OPCON units, assess the tactical proficiency of maneuver elements, and demonstrate the brigade’s fire support capabilities in ESO missions.

“The Live Fire Exercise is not just the culmination of our ESO Training but a testament to the high level of readiness and professionalism of our soldiers. It is a clear declaration that we stand ready to support maneuver units in ensuring the safety and peace of our communities,” Cayton said.

The designated impact areas included Brgy. Salman in Ampatuan; Brgy. Meta in Datu Unsay, and Brgys. Limpongo and Talibadok in Datu Hoffer. The brigade ensured close coordination with local government units and communities to guarantee safety, awareness, and compliance with protocols to prevent entry into firing zones.

The Army also urged residents to promptly report any sightings of unexploded ordnance (UXO) to authorities. Strict safety measures were observed throughout the exercises to safeguard the public.

Meanwhile, Major General Donald M. Gumiran, commander of the 6th Infantry Division and Task Force Central, lauded the artillerymen for demonstrating skills vital to the division’s overall operations.

“The excellence of our artillery troops serves as the backbone of our maneuver units. Through their expertise and dedication, we further strengthen our capability to fulfill our mission for peace,” Gumiran said.

The Philippine Army reaffirmed its commitment to boosting artillery proficiency, improving combat readiness, and promoting inter-agency cooperation in support of national peace and security.

Modern Warfare Ready: Army Artillery Regiment Unleashes Cutting-Edge Firepower

By Mark Navales

Cotabato City -- The Army Artillery Regiment (AAR) of the Philippine Army is a specialized unit tasked with delivering artillery fire support to maneuver elements across the service. Comprising 11 field artillery battalions and air defence artillery battalion, the AAR plays a critical role in sustaining combat effectiveness—especially in communication-denied environments.

Among its most recent enhancements is the acquisition of 12 Elbit Systems Soltam ATMOS 2000 155mm/52-caliber self-propelled howitzers (SPHs), delivered in late 2021. This upgrade, part of the Philippine Army’s broader modernization initiative, significantly boosts the Army’s indirect fire capabilities.

“Accuracy is a key aspect of artillery effectiveness,” said Brigadier General Hubert S. Acierto, Commander of the AAR. “It is achieved through rigorous training, precise equipment calibration, and advanced technologies such as the Fire Control Alignment Test (FCAT).”

He underscored the strategic importance of artillery in ground operations, noting that it serves multiple roles—suppressing enemy positions, providing covering fire for advancing units, and enhancing the overall success of military campaigns.

A shining example of artillery excellence, the 6th Field Artillery Battalion (6FAB) has marked 27 years of exemplary service. From combat operations in Central Mindanao to high-level joint and littoral exercises, the unit has demonstrated unwavering commitment, precision, and adaptability.

Lieutenant Colonel Tara Cayton, commander of the 6FAB, emphasized the battalion’s dedication to integrated joint operations.

“We have continuously provided timely and accurate artillery fire support, while also helping integrate indirect fire into combined arms and joint missions in support of the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Operations (CADO) of Joint Task Force Central,” she said.

The task force is headed by Major General Donald M. Gumiran, commander of the 6th Infantry Division at Camp Siongco, DOS Maguindanao Del Norte.

“Looking ahead, 6FAB remains steadfast in its mission to defend Central Mindanao with precision, professionalism, and honor,” Lt. Col. Cayton added.

Brig. Gen. Acierto lauded the battalion’s embrace of modern warfare concepts, praising it as a model for technological advancement and strategic innovation. He also commended Lt. Col. Cayton and her personnel for their leadership and service.

The 6FAB’s accomplishments are particularly significant given the backdrop of protracted conflict in Mindanao. Rooted in long-standing struggles for autonomy, groups like the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (M**F) have been central actors. The rise of extremist factions such as the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and Daulah Islamiya has further intensified violence, leading to mass casualties, displacement, and a prolonged humanitarian crisis affecting both Muslim and Christian communities.

In response, the Philippine government has employed both military action and peacebuilding initiatives, culminating in the formation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Throughout these efforts, the 6th Field Artillery Battalion has played a vital role, earning recognition for its sacrifice, professionalism, and critical impact in the field.

The anniversary celebration highlighted the battalion’s pivotal role in regional peace and security. A series of activities—including award ceremonies, live fire demonstrations, and community engagement—reflected 6FAB’s holistic approach to excellence in both military operations and civic service.

“Let us all reflect on the legacy of this 'Deadly Accurate' battalion,” he said. “As you celebrate this milestone, know that your dedication and service have made a significant impact on our regiment and the nation as a whole.”

BGen. Acierto praised the 6FAB’s embrace of modern warfare tactics, saying that the battalion remains at the forefront of technological advancement and strategic innovation. He also commended Lieutenant Colonel Tara Cayton, the battalion commander, along with her officers and troops, for their exemplary leadership.

“Her leadership has shaped the character of this unit and instilled a lasting sense of professionalism and pride,” he added.

Lt. Col. Cayton, in her remarks, emphasized the battalion’s commitment to integrated joint operations.

“6FAB provides timely and accurate artillery fire support and assists in integrating indirect fire support into combined arms and joint operations to support the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Operations (CADO) of Joint Task Force Central,” she said.

She also extended gratitude to civilian stakeholders, recognizing their contributions to the unit’s ongoing success.

“You are our partners in nation-building. Your continued support helps us serve with honor, courage, commitment, and dedication.”

As part of the weeklong anniversary festivities, the battalion hosted a wide range of events.
Field Artillery and Disaster Response Operations (FADRO) Challenge (May 22–24), Philippine Army Character Enhancement Program (PACEP) (May 27), Tree Growing Activity (May 28), Unit Conference and Sports Fest (May 28–29), Zumba Wellness Session (May 30), Thanksgiving Mass and Awarding Ceremony (May 31) and a Boodle Fight and Foam Party capped off the celebration.

These activities reflected 6FAB’s dedication to physical, mental, spiritual, and environmental well-being—hallmarks of a battalion committed to holistic excellence.

Looking ahead, 6FAB remains steadfast in its mission to defend Central Mindanao with precision, professionalism, and honor.

Pres. Marcos Commissions New Philippine Navy Warships Amid Rising Maritime Tensions

By Jeoffrey Maitem and Mark Navales

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the commissioning of the country’s latest state-of-the-art naval asset, the 3,200-ton BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG-06), at the Naval Operating Base in Subic, Zambales — formerly the site of Washington’s largest overseas naval base.

Classified as a guided-missile corvette, the vessel arrived in Manila on April 4. It is named after Miguel Malvar, the last Filipino general to surrender during the Philippine-American War. Measuring over 100 meters in length, the ship is equipped with anti-submarine and anti-aircraft capabilities.

BRP Malvar and its sister ship, BRP Diego Silang, expected to arrive later this year, were acquired from South Korea under a PHP 28-billion (US$483 million) contract signed in 2021 with shipbuilder HD Hyundai.

Among the Malvar’s weapons systems are a 76mm Oto Melara main gun, C-Star anti-ship missiles, and Blue Shark anti-submarine torpedoes.

Also commissioned during the ceremony was the BRP Albert Majini (PG-909), a fast attack interdiction craft (FAIC-M) designed for rapid interdiction and coastal operations. It is the first patrol vessel locally assembled under the Philippine Navy’s Littoral Combat Force initiative.

The eighth ship of the Acero-class, BRP Majini is named after Ensign Albert Majini, a Medal of Valor awardee recognized for his bravery during anti-piracy operations in Basilan in 1980.

In his speech marking the 127th anniversary of the Philippine Navy, Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta emphasized the Navy’s growing capability to defend the nation’s maritime interests.

“Our readiness has become even more crucial in navigating the present security environment filled with urgent challenges related to developments in our seas,” Ezpeleta said.

“We are aware that our country’s future is linked to the security of our maritime domain. Our Navy plays a vital role — not just in defending sovereignty and territorial integrity, but also in preserving marine resources for future generations.”

Both BRP Malvar and BRP Majini will be deployed to patrol and safeguard Philippine interests in the West Philippine Sea — Manila’s designation for the part of the South China Sea within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

President Marcos issued a strong statement asserting the Philippines' resolve in the face of regional tensions.

“We will not surrender anything. We will not abandon anyone. We reaffirm our commitment to being responsible members of the international community, engaging diplomatically and upholding international law,” the President said.

Though he did not name any country directly, the statement comes amid ongoing tensions with China, which claims nearly the entire South China Sea — overlapping with claims by the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam. A 2016 ruling by an international tribunal dismissed China’s sweeping claims, a decision Beijing has consistently rejected.

“This obligation is reflected in our proactive and sustained engagement in international defense and security efforts,” Marcos added.

Commenting on the significance of the acquisitions, Chester Cabalza, president of the Manila-based think tank International Development and Security Cooperation, said the new ships — especially the locally assembled BRP Majini — symbolize a step forward in the country’s self-reliant defense aspirations.

“The arrival of the new frigates comes at a time when Manila is expanding its focus on economic security and territorial defense while prioritizing the protection of its people from internal and external threats,” Cabalza told Trident News Philippines.

“It emboldens our seamen and marines to build a stronger navy ready to defend the Philippines’ vital waters.”

He added that the maritime domain represents the future of Philippine defense, economic resilience, environmental protection, and adherence to international law.

“Our territorial waters must be protected, as they hold the key to our sovereignty, security, and survival,” Cabalza said.
