Chapter 2: The Envelope Without a Name
I didn’t open it right away.
I don’t know why.
Maybe it was the way the stranger looked at me, like they already knew what I would do. Or maybe it was the feeling in my chest, heavy and tight, like once I opened that envelope, there would be no going back.
I stood outside our gate longer than I should have, staring at it.
Plain. Sealed. Silent.
No name. No address. No reason.
Just… waiting.
“Are you going to stand there all day?”
I jumped.
My aunt’s voice snapped me out of it. She stood by the door, arms crossed, eyebrows slightly raised.
“I, uh, just got home,” I said quickly, slipping the envelope behind my back.
She narrowed her eyes for a second, like she almost noticed. But then she just shook her head.
“Come inside. Dinner’s getting cold.”
I nodded and followed her in, my heart still racing.
The house felt smaller that night.
Every sound seemed louder, the clink of utensils, the hum of the fan, even the ticking clock on the wall. I kept thinking about the envelope hidden in my bag, like it was calling me.
Open me.
Open me.
But I didn’t.
Not yet.
Dinner passed in silence. My aunt talked a little about groceries and bills, the usual things. I nodded when I needed to, but I wasn’t really listening.
Because all I could think about was what was inside that envelope.
Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore.
“I’ll go to my room,” I said, standing up a little too quickly.
My aunt glanced at me. “Don’t stay up too late.”
“I won’t.”
That was a lie.
The moment I closed my door, everything changed.
The quiet felt different now, not peaceful, but tense. Like the air itself was waiting.
Slowly, I walked to my desk.
My bag sat there.
Waiting.
I unzipped it carefully, as if making too much noise would somehow trigger something. My fingers found the envelope almost instantly.
Even through the paper, it felt… strange.
I pulled it out and placed it on the desk.
For a moment, I just stared at it again.
This is stupid, I told myself. It’s just paper.
But my hands didn’t feel like they belonged to me anymore.
Carefully, I slid my finger under the flap.
And opened it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
No, not just paper.
It was thicker. Heavier. Like it was made to last.
I pulled it out and unfolded it slowly.
There were only a few words written on it.
But they hit harder than anything I’d ever read.
“If you’re reading this, it means we were right about you.”
I blinked.
“What…?”
I read it again.
“We’ve been watching you.”
A chill ran down my spine.
Watching me?
That wasn’t possible.
Right?
My eyes moved to the next line.
“You are not who you think you are.”
My breath caught.
That didn’t make any sense.
Of course, I knew who I was. I was just...
Just…
I stopped.
For some reason, I couldn’t finish that thought.
The last line was different.
Bolder.
More urgent.
“Come alone. Midnight. Don’t tell anyone.”
Below it was an address.
I stared at it, my mind spinning.
This had to be a joke.
A prank.
Someone messing with me.
But deep down, I knew it wasn’t.
Everything about this felt too real.
Too precise.
Too… planned.
I slowly lowered the paper.
And that’s when I noticed something else.
At the bottom corner.
A symbol.
Small.
Sharp.
A circle… with a line cutting through it.
I frowned.
I had seen it before.
I was sure of it.
But I couldn’t remember where.
Frustrated, I leaned back in my chair, staring at the ceiling.
“Come alone. Midnight.”
I glanced at the clock.
10:47 PM.
Not long to wait.
I should ignore it.
That was the smart thing to do.
The safe thing.
But something inside me refused.
The same feeling from earlier, that pull, that curiosity, it was stronger now.
What if this was real?
What if this was important?
What if…
this was meant for me?
I stood up.
My decision already made, even if I didn’t want to admit it.
Carefully, I folded the paper and slipped it into my pocket.
Then I grabbed my jacket.
The house was quiet as I stepped out of my room. My aunt’s door was closed, the lights off.
Good.
She couldn’t know.
No one could.
I opened the front door slowly, wincing at every small creak.
Then...
I stepped outside.
The night air hit me instantly, cool, sharp, alive.
The streets that felt normal earlier now felt completely different.
Darker.
Heavier.
Like I was walking into something I couldn’t see.
I checked the address again.
Then looked ahead.
And started walking.
I didn’t know what I would find.
I didn’t know who was waiting.
All I knew was...
Nothing about my life felt ordinary anymore.
And whatever was waiting for me at midnight…
was about to change everything.
