On May 25, at about 07:50 hours, the Liberian-flagged container vessel MSC ELSA 3 sank off the coast of Kochi after developing a 26-degree starboard tilt. Fortunately, all 24 crew members were rescued safely—21 evacuated by the Indian Coast Guard and 3 by INS Sujata.
The ship, which had been sailing from Vizhinjam to Kochi, was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous materials and 12 containing calcium carbide. Additionally, the vessel had onboard 84.44 metric tonnes of diesel and 367.1 metric tonnes of furnace oil.
The Indian Coast Guard has deployed aircraft equipped with oil spill detection and mapping systems to monitor the situation. As of now, no oil leakage has been reported..

A loaded bulk carrier was under way at sea. A leak had been discovered in the main fire line on the main deck near hold five, and the bosun and an officer were tasked to fix it. The fire pump was stopped and the two men started working on replacing the fl**ge gasket in the line. About an hour later, the OOW observed the wind speed and the height of waves increasing. The Master was informed of the deteriorating weather conditions, and contacted the chief officer and asked him to stop work on deck and secure the loose equipment.

By the time the chief officer told the men to stop work on the fire line the job was already completed. It only remained to collect the tools, which they proceeded to do after a rest break for coffee. As the men collected the tools, a heavy wave swept the deck from the starboard side. Both men were caught by the wave; the OOW held on to the railing, but the bosun was swept overboard by the force of the water. The alarm was raised and the crew began search sweeps of the area. Several hours later, with weather deteriorating further and darkness, the search was called off. The bosun was never found.

A general cargo vessel in ballast was transiting the restricted waterways of a canal in darkness. The canal is traversed by many bridges and interrupted by locks. As is the custom in this area of the canal, the pilot was at the wheel, manoeuvring and conning the vessel, while the officer of the watch (OOW) and Master were in a support role in the wheelhouse. The pilot was also responsible for VHF communications with vessel traffic services (VTS) and the bridge operators, which were conducted in the local language.

With a speed over ground (SOG) of 8kt and the current astern, the pilot reported to the VTS that the vessel was approaching a railway lift bridge. As the vessel approached the bridge, the OOW worked the searchlight to illuminate forward. The pilot called the bridge operator and understood that the vessel could pass the bridge as the next scheduled train was delayed. At about six cables to the bridge the vessel’s speed was reduced. In the darkness it was not possible to make out the bridge signal lights because of the glare from bright background floodlights nearby.
