The headliner is the rare and legendary Kemp's ridley sea turtle

You might also see loggerheads and greens, but Kemp’s ridleys are the Coastal Bend VIPs

🐾 What you’ll notice on the beach:

Big ol’ tractor-tire looking tracks from the surf to the dunes

Nesting usually happens at night, low-key and under the moonlight

Hatchlings pop out later and make a mad dash to the Gulf like tiny wind-up toys

These ancient ocean wanderers outlived the dinosaurs but they are facing their greatest challenge yet and desperately need your help!

Dive into the breathtaking underwater world of sea turtles and discover the seven magnificent species that navigate our global oceans today. Every single type plays an absolutely critical role in maintaining a perfectly balanced marine ecosystem. The Green Sea Turtle is famous for its stunning olive colored shell and spends its days grazing on underwater pastures to keep seagrass beds healthy and thriving for other marine wildlife. Loggerhead Sea Turtles use their massive heads and incredibly powerful jaws to crush hard shelled prey like crabs and mollusks which actively balances the complex marine food web. These massive giants can dive thousands of feet deep and cross entire oceans just to hunt for their favorite meal of jellyfish. The gorgeous Hawksbill Sea Turtle features a beautifully patterned shell and a narrow beak perfectly designed to eat sponges that would otherwise overgrow and suffocate fragile coral reefs.

The Kemps Ridley Sea Turtle takes the title of the smallest and one of the absolute rarest species globally and they are legendary for their synchronized mass nesting events called arribadas. Their close relative is the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle which shares that highly social nesting behavior where thousands of mothers arrive on the exact same beach at once. Finally the Flatback Sea Turtle is uniquely found only in Australian waters where its distinctly flat shell helps it navigate and protect coastal environments. Even though these incredible reptiles have survived for millions of years they are currently battling severe threats from plastic pollution and habitat destruction alongside accidental capture and changing global climates.
