Pulong Urges PNP Chief Torre to Sign Waiver Before Boxing Match with Mayor Baste, Backs Drug Test Condition
Davao City 1st District Representative Paolo “Pulong” Duterte has advised Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III to first sign a waiver before pushing through with his proposed boxing match against Acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte.
The waiver, Duterte said, should absolve his younger brother of any legal liability should anything happen to either of them during the much-hyped bout.
“Kung seryoso siya, mag-sign muna ng waiver. Kay kung mapuruhan sya, mamatay, mapriso, akong igsoon. Mag-pirmahanay sa sila sa abugado. Mas maayo na. Puro man kaha sila isog,” the Dabawenyo solon said Friday, July 25.
Duterte emphasized that public officials, especially those holding high office, must act with accountability—even inside the boxing ring.
In a show of full support for his brother, Rep. Duterte also backed Mayor Baste’s condition that all government officials must first undergo a hair follicle drug test before any boxing match takes place.
“If they are truly clean, then they have nothing to worry about. Nganong hadlok man mo? Naa moy gitago? Kay kung musugot sila sa hair follicle test, magpausab na pud kog test bahalag manga-opaw ta ani. This should be standard if we want to set a good example for the public,” Pulong said.
He added that public officials, especially those in uniform or holding elective positions, should not only appear clean—they should prove it.
“Accountability starts with transparency. You can’t be throwing punches while hiding something.”
Duterte however dismissed the boxing challenge as “pampapogi” and theatrics, saying if Torre genuinely wanted to help flood victims in Metro Manila and Luzon, he should simply donate his own money.
“Kung gusto talaga niyang tumulong, mag-donate na lang siya. Hindi na kailangang idaan pa sa suntukan,” he said. “This isn’t showbiz. We need public servants focused on real solutions, not side shows.”
He also reminded both camps that the country is grappling with more serious issues—widespread flooding, economic pressure, and disaster response gaps.
The proposed charity boxing match between the PNP chief and the Davao City mayor has sparked mixed reactions online, with supporters cheering the idea and critics warning of its implications. Congressman Duterte made it clear: he stands by his brother—but with conditions.
“Mag-sign muna ng waiver. Magpa-drug test na rin. Kung talagang malinis, eh ‘di go.”
