There has been a lot of comments about the overzealous Pinoy fans of Alex Eala in many of her matches. It’s framed around spectator etiquette that’s been a hallmark and tradition in tennis.

The problem is, not only does “spectator etiquette” come off as snobbish or even elitist, but it complicates what are otherwise just simple, common sense reasons why tennis spectators are encouraged to tone it down or stay mostly quiet when watching a tennis match, no matter how thrilling it gets.

The thing is, we just need to see a match from a competitor’s point of view to understand why spectators need to hold it in.

So how should someone new to the sport actually behave in a live match being watched for the first time?

Well first, imagine you’re Alex and you’re rolling up to a stadium, about to compete in a game played on a razor’s edge and mostly in one’s head, with all your senses dialled up to 11 from years of playing. That’s already a lot going on in one’s head even before the first serve.

Now it’s game time. Visualize a tennis ball flying at you at 190 kph. At this point, every single millisecond counts. Because players aren't just watching the ball. They are actually listening to it. No, really. Elite players can actually sense the spin of the ball from years of playing at the elite level.

The pop off an opponent’s racket reveals the spin, power, and trajectory before the ball even clears the net.

So a sudden scream, a ringing phone, or someone flashing a neon bucket hat in the third row mid-serve can throw off that split-second mental math completely.

So, how does one enjoy the chaos then, without accidentally becoming the villain of the match? The secret rhythm is simple. Go wild, but time it right.

You can scream, jump, and lose your mind after a brilliant rally, just hit the mute button immediately once the server bounces the ball.

Treat movement the same way.

If you need a drink or a bathroom run, wait for the changeover when the players swap ends. Wandering down the aisle mid-point is the fast track to getting death-stared by hardcore or veteran tennis spectators.

Oh, and while cheering for your favorite player is awesome, hold the applause when the opponent double-faults into the net. Save the love for the epic winners, let the silence build the tension, and you’ll realize the quiet actually makes the massive explosions of noise way more electric.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- An intense rescue along the waters of a California beach was captured on video.

It happened at as large swells contributed to at least 25 rescues across Santa Cruz County, officials and witnesses said.

The rescue at Seabright State Beach near the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk was captured on video by witness Scott Vander Dussen, who said he watched a lifeguard rush into the water to help the boy.

"I saw the lifeguard just run straight out into the water, and, you know, he dove in, setting fear aside," Vander Dussen said.

Video of the rescue shows a lifeguard battling powerful waves while working to bring the boy to safety. According to Vander Dussen, conditions appeared to change rapidly.

"And I think in this situation, the young man was already out there. I don't think he was bargaining for this. It looked like those waves changed quickly, and he just got overpowered and swept out," he said.

At one point, beachgoers attempted to assist but were also hit hard by the waves.

"We appreciate their eagerness to help, but often we find that that leads to more problems," said Byran Kine, a lifeguard supervisor for Santa Cruz State Parks.

Kine said the surf has been especially challenging.

"It is really, really strong surf right now, so even for us, it's really challenging, in the knee-to-waist-deep range when there's so much water moving," he said.

Vander Dussen described the lifeguard's efforts to keep the boy from being pulled back into the water.

"The lifeguard just had a gorilla grip on that young man, held him from getting swept back out," he said.

The rescue was one of at least 25 reported Saturday in Santa Cruz County as massive swells pounded the shoreline. In this case, a second lifeguard helped bring the boy safely onto the beach.

"They were trying to help, but then ultimately another lifeguard was able to assist, and I think the two of them did the lion's share of the work," Vander Dussen said.

All involved made it safely to shore. Vander Dussen said the outcome could have been much different without the lifeguards' actions.

"If the lifeguards were not out there, it would have had a different ending. He was in desperate need of help, and those two lifeguards went in and did what needed to be done," he said.

It’s hard to comprehend how quickly life can change. On June 2nd, Rene was on his mom’s FB live, selflessly signing small photos to be made into keychains just to help his family raise a little extra pocket money for his big move to Manila. Just 4 days later, he was gone.

​Rene was the epitome of a humble province boy with a golden heart. He chose Jersey #2 for his two younger sisters, gave his own shoes to his sibling, and always put his family first. Even in the heat of a basketball game, if someone punched him, he would be the one to say sorry just to keep the peace. He was too pure for this world.
