The Department of Education (DepEd)-Davao City Division said the City Government of Davao’s strong support was one of the key factors in achieving a 93.5 literacy rate last year.

Reynante Solitario, DepEd-Davao City Division Schools Division Superintendent, said in an interview that the city’s literacy rate is a strong indicator of the city’s sustained commitment to inclusive and accessible education carried out with the support and initiatives of the city government and education stakeholders.

“The city government has allocated substantial resources toward education infrastructure, teacher development, and learning materials,” he shared.

As part of its support, the city government allotted P5 Million-worth of Beginning Reading Kits Level I, and approved the proposal of procuring Active Reading Buddy that amounted to P7.5 Million.

The Special Education Fund (SEF) fund was also used in the constructions of classrooms, provision of learning tools, and support for various educational initiatives.

Solitario added that the city government, in partnership with non government organizations, played a vital role in strengthening the Alternative Learning System (ALS) in the city that reached out-of-school youth, indigenous peoples, and adult learners.

This flexible learning option significantly improved literacy levels among marginalized communities.

The City Government of Davao, through the City Library and Information Center (CLIC), also deploys its mobile libraries to public elementary schools.

These library buses are equipped with books and other learning materials, arts and crafts supplies, board games, and educational movies. One of the buses is intended to specifically deliver Emergency Preparedness lectures to raise disaster risk awareness in grade school and high school students.

The mobile ibraries also prioritize far-flung areas to ensure that people residing in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas have access to information the same way people living near the city’s center have.

“The city’s proactive stance in supporting literacy, from early childhood to adult education, has ensured that education remains a right accessible to all Dabawenyos,” Solitario said. CIO

In line with the month-long Flores de Mayo, the Davao City Library and Information Center (DCLIC) has been engaging children in bible storytelling sessions by visiting barangays across the city.

Genevieve Tagudin, Children’s Librarian of DCLIC, said that since last month they visited various barangays encouraging children to explore the mobile library’s collection and engaging them with bible storytelling.

She said they started this initiative for the summer season, to ensure that young learners have opportunities to read and interact with books after their religious activities.

Among the barangays that have already benefitted from the initiative are Wines, Gumalang, Malagos, Carmen, Cadalian, and Tawan-Tawan. Next week, the team is set to visit Calinan.

She said that starting June 16, the mobile library will resume bringing books and holding storytelling sessions in schools and barangays, including remote areas like Malabog, Marilog, and Paquibato districts.

“Even sa mga remote nga areas naa ta’y mga schedule kung kaya pa sudlan sa atong mobile bus atoang sudlan para madala nato ang atoang mga libro, mapabasa sa mga bata, ug makahatag ta og services sa ilaha (We also have schedules even in remote areas so that we can bring our books to them, have them read our books, and provide our essential services to them),” she said.

She also said that their team works closely with the Department of Education, setting a scheduled visit to 93 schools across the city.

The DCLIC also continues holding educational activities like reading sessions, book donations, writing workshops, and exhibits of murals and artworks created by local artists. Other activities conducted include library etiquette orientation, book character parade, and puzzle challenge.

Tagudin said that this month, the library will host a “Palaro ng Lahi” and “Online Kwentuhan” as part of National Heritage Month, along with a museum tour.

She said that barangays that wish to bring the mobile library can request a schedule thru their email address ([email protected]) or visit them personally at 203 C., Bangoy Street, Barangay 34-D, Poblacion District, Davao City. For inquiries, Dabawenyos may call (082) 285-5599. CIO
