Opinion: The horrendous traffic experienced by most commuters earlier this evening boils down to the city's lack of a proper public transport.
As more people see the inconvenience of jeepneys, those who can afford to would buy their own vehicle. Leading to an ever-increasing volume of traffic throughout the city.
Granted that there are the ongoing projects such as Davao Coastal Road, Davao Bypass Road, Maa and Ulas Flyovers to accomodate the increasing private vehicles. But as various studies point out, these would further entice people to buy their own vehicles, furthermore exacerbating traffic. Although the construction of these are now being fast-tracked, only delayed by Road-Right-of-Way and funding issues.
And there is the DavaoBus Project, which the Department of Transportation and the City Government of Davao is already working diligently on. But it is still a year or two away, also delayed by Right-of-Way and funding issues.
It may be a year or two of wait and of suffering, but once all the buses, infrastructure, and systems (hopefully LRTs and the MRP soon too) are in place, Dabawenyos can be assured that these sacrifices will be rewarded with what can be called as a true and comfortable "public transportation".
This post just aims to shed a bit of light on the city's worsening traffic and commuting problems and that efforts are being taken by the National and especially the Local governments to solve and alleviate it.
