Globe deploys satellite-to-mobile connectivity in Mindanao for disaster response

Globe in partnership with Starlink deployed its satellite-to-mobile service in South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the said provinces. Globe deployed the service to support emergency communications and disaster response in the badly hit areas upon approval of its demo permit from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

The deployment marks Globe's first use of Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile technology for disaster and emergency response in the Philippines. Over 700,000 Globe and TM customers stand to benefit from the deployment, providing them with messaging through WhatsApp and SMS at a time when it is needed most. Globe will offer the service for free for up to 30 days as critical support to the affected communities until Globe’s network is fully restored.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to support our kababayans in Mindanao and we hope that through the demo permits previously issued by the NTC, this deployment will demonstrate how this technology really works," said Carl Cruz, President and CEO of Globe. "This initial deployment will show how satellite-to-mobile technology can provide communications support and strengthen network resilience during these times."

The earthquake prompted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to issue tsunami warnings for several coastal communities in Southern Mindanao. This also caused network disruptions across multiple provinces, affecting around 30 municipalities as commercial power interruptions impacted telecommunications facilities in several locations.

Globe is working closely with the local government units and local electric cooperatives to fully restore its services in badly hit areas.
Globe will reach out to its customers directly to provide them with instructions to connect to the satellite service using their existing Globe SIMs and LTE enabled phones.

The satellite deployment complements Globe's broader disaster response efforts across Mindanao.

More than 500 individuals from different establishments and agencies participated in the Mindanao leg of the free Hands-Only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training campaign initiated by SM Supermalls and Arise Philippines in partnership with Department of Health - Health Emergency Management Bureau (DOH-HEMB).

As part of the vision of building a resilient nation, three separate Hands-Only CPR training campaigns were conducted at SM City General Santos, SM City Davao, and SM Lanang on June 3 and 4.

More than 190 mall employees and partner agencies participated in the SM Lanang session, over 180 in SM City General Santos, and more than 170 in SM City Davao, taking part in engaging demonstrations and hands-on activities that reinforced the importance of equipping everyday Filipinos with life-saving skills crucial during emergencies.

During the hands-on demonstration, participants simulated CPR responses proper for an adult and infant person in need of CPR intervention.

Through the campaign, SM Supermalls and Arise Philippines aim to promote public awareness and capacitate frontliners and ordinary citizens in cardiac emergency responses. /SM PR

SM Davao employees spread social good through Brigada Eskwela 2026

SM Lanang and SM City Davao employees helped prepare safer and more welcoming learning spaces for students by volunteering to clean and repaint classrooms and school grounds in two public schools in Davao City in support of the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela.

Around 70 employees from both malls helped clean school facilities and grounds in Vicente Hizon, Sr. Elementary School and Riverside Elementary School in Calinan District in separate HR-led activities conducted on June 5, 2026.

The two malls also handed over some cleaning tools, paint kits, and trash bins to the schools, respectively.

This year’s Brigada Eskwela, themed “Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkaisa para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman”, highlights volunteer initiatives to ensure a clean, safe, and inclusive learning, teaching, and working environment for learners, teachers, and non-teaching personnel.

Through volunteerism, cleanup drives, and coordinated efforts, SM Davao malls help prepare environments conducive to learning and teaching, supporting students and educators in their daily school activities.

The two malls have a longstanding tradition of participating in the annual Brigada Eskwela under the malls’ employee volunteerism program of the HR Department. /SM PR
