Teh tarik, which means "pulled tea," is a popular hot milk tea beverage from Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia. It is made by blending strong black tea with sweetened condensed milk and then "pulling" it back and forth between two containers to mix it thoroughly and create a frothy top.
Ingredients: The base is a strong brew of black tea mixed with sweetened condensed milk, and sometimes evaporated milk or sugar.
Preparation: The name "teh tarik" comes from the method of preparing it. The tea and milk are poured repeatedly between two vessels to cool the drink, thoroughly mix the ingredients, and aerate it, which creates a signature frothy head.
Cultural significance: Teh tarik is considered the unofficial national drink of Malaysia and is a staple in the region, often enjoyed in mamak stalls and kopitiams throughout the day and into the night. It is also a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage food.
