A hero got a gold medal, and he fit in the palm of a hand 🏅. His name was Magawa, a giant African pouched rat trained by the demining charity APOPO to detect landmines in Cambodia, one of the most heavily bombed countries in history. These rats are ideal for the job: they’re light enough not to trigger explosives and have an extraordinary sense of smell, allowing them to detect TNT far faster than humans with metal detectors.

During his career, Magawa located 71 landmines and 38 other unexploded ordnance, helping clear more than 225,000 square meters of land. According to APOPO studies, rats like Magawa can search an area in about 30 minutes that would take a human up to four days. That efficiency saves time, money, and most importantly, lives.

In 2020, Magawa received the PDSA Gold Medal, often called the “animal George Cross,” recognizing his bravery and devotion to duty. In landscapes shaped by war, this small hero made safety possible again 🐀
