Did you know?
đ„¶ Hot water can freeze faster than cold water! This bizarre phenomenon is known as the Mpemba Effect, named after Erasto Mpemba, a Tanzanian student who first observed it in the 1960s.
At first, it sounds impossibleâshouldnât cold water be closer to freezing? But under certain conditions, hot water actually reaches the freezing point faster than cold. Scientists are still exploring why, but some theories include evaporation (which reduces volume), differences in convection, supercooling, and changes in dissolved gases.
Though it doesnât happen every time or in every situation, the Mpemba Effect is a real and fascinating example of how nature doesnât always follow our expectations. Itâs also a great reminder that even everyday thingsâlike freezing waterâcan hold amazing secrets.
Try it at home and see what happens!
