PPA Temporarily Suspends Port Operations in Coastal Areas Amid Tsunami Threat
30 July 2025 — In response to the tsunami advisory issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) following the powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has ordered the immediate suspension of port operations in high-risk coastal areas across the country.
Through a memorandum released by PPA General Manager Jay Santiago, all Port Management Offices (PMOs) under the agency are directed to halt all passenger embarkation and disembarkation, as well as cargo handling operations, starting at 12:00 noon today, July 30, 2025, and continuing until PHIVOLCS declares the tsunami threat has passed.
Affected areas span Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, including:
-Luzon: Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon
-Visayas: Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte
-Mindanao: Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao de Oro
The PPA is coordinating closely with the Philippine Coast Guard, local government units, and terminal operators to monitor sea-level activity and ensure public safety. All vessels currently docked or approaching affected ports have been instructed to relocate to deeper waters as a precaution.
“We urge everyone to remain alert and cooperative as we work closely with our partner agencies to monitor the situation. The safety of our people is our utmost priority,” GM Santiago emphasized.
Residents and port workers are advised to stay away from beaches and coastal zones during the threat period. Emergency response teams have been activated, and all vulnerable floating equipment and port assets are being secured.
