WHAT IS THE EASTER VIGIL?

The United Methodist Book of Worship explains:

"During the Great Three Days, from sunset Holy Thursday to sunset Easter Day, we celebrate the saving events of Jesus Christ's suffering, death, and resurrection. In the development of Christian worship, each event came to be remembered on a separate day. In the earliest centuries, however, these events were celebrated as a unity in an extraordinary single liturgy that began Saturday night and continued until the dawn of Easter Day. It was known as the great Paschal (Easter) Vigil. Preceded by a fast day, it was the most holy and joyful night of the entire Christian year, for it proclaimed and celebrated the whole of salvation history and Christ's saving work.

The Easter (Paschal) Vigil has both historic and symbolic roots in the Jewish Passover. That is why so many images are from the Old Testament and why so many analogies are experienced in Christ. In this service we experience the passage from slavery to freedom, from sin to salvation, from death to life.

The Easter Vigil is the First Service of Easter. The following service is an adaptation of the ancient Paschal Vigil service and consists of four parts: (1) The Service of Light, (2) The Service of the Word, (3) The Service of the Baptismal Covenant, and (4) The Service of the Table. Thus we celebrate God's saving work in Christ through the symbols of light, word, water, and the heavenly banquet."

In preparation for the Lent, here is a decluttering challenge that you can do for a meaningful observation of the season.

40 Days – 40 Items
My Lent Giving Bag

This Lenten Season 2021, I accept the challenge to declutter my life – to remove unwanted, unnecessary, unfit, unused things from my house to be given to those who need them or to the church for our outreach ministries.

Decluttering my life means giving more space to set my eyes to, less things to think about, lesser time to dust and fix, lesser stress, and more time to be with Jesus.

Today, February 17, until Holy Friday on April 2, I will look daily for at least one (1) thing that I no longer want or use or have kept for a long time but no longer serve me but still useable; and I will put them in this bag. I will put a tag on each item according to perceived value. Once I have put them in, I should no longer look at them again and take them back. They will be brought to church on Holy Friday for a garage sale or distribution to communities. The things I placed in the bag are no longer mine. If I thought that I need any of them, I should buy it back. I understand that all proceeds from the sale will not go back to me but to be donated for the outreach ministries.

Things have been different since pandemic and same goes to our Christmas shopping. Here are some things we can do as we get gifts for our loved ones:

1. Shop online - seeing and touching things are great ways to choose gifts but online shopping can be our better option to protect ourselves and others. Covid-19 threat is still at hand and going to the store may not be safe. If you are skeptic about the product, read reviews or ask recommendations from friends where to get best online deals.

2. Drop-ship - no time to go and personally give your gifts, you can directly send what you have shopped online to your intended recipient's address (just make sure to ask the seller not to include invoice 🙂).

3. Support Local - a lot of small businesses sprout to make a living after economic downturn. Buy from your community or from friends and let small businesses thrive too!

4. Buy early - get your presents as early as possible to avoid the rush, delay of deliveries, and missing out of good deals. As the saying goes, early bird catches the worm. Just like buying for Upper Room Disciplines 2021, make your reservation now to get the best devotional guide for you and for your loved ones.

If you have more tips, we would love to hear from you. Happy shopping and giving! 🙂
