It's a cunning way of encouraging people to write something.

If it was "What have you been doing?" then people who don't feel they've been doing much will be reluctant to write anything. "Stuffing around on the internet while eating popcorn" doesn't feel worth sharing.

But "What's on your mind?" is much easier to relate to. It still lets people share things because the thing that's on their mind might be the amazing bowl of popcorn they just had. But it also lets people share what they think about the latest sports result or TV show or what they plan to do tomorrow or how amazing it would be if penguins had a voice like Barry White. Even people who don't actually do anything interesting could have interesting thoughts
